The International Philatelic Exhibition was held from 23 May 1906 at the Royal Horticultural Hall, London."The International Philatelic Exhibition, London, 1906." by Charles J. Phillips in ''Stanley Gibbons Monthly Journal'', 31 May 1906, pp. 228-249. In his opening remarks, recorded in '' Stanley Gibbons Monthly Journal'', Charles Phillips thanked the Prince of Wales for visiting the exhibition and noted that it was about 55 years since the first stamp exhibition had taken place in Brussels in 1852. At the traditional banquet on 25 May, the usual loyal toasts were made and Mr H.R. Oldfield remarked in his speech upon the international nature of philately and ventured to prophesy that philately would be prosperous when Esperanto had been forgotten. He also noted the presence of ladies, for the first time, at the event. Lindley Hall in Elverton Street, Westminster, London is the older of the two Royal Horticultural Halls and is owned by RHS Enterprises Limited, which is part of the charity Royal Horticultural Society in central London. ''Gibbons Stamp Monthly'' (''GSM'') is a British philatelic magazine which can trace its roots back to 1890. GSM is published by the famous stamps and collectables firm of Stanley Gibbons and each issue includes updates to their various catalogues. Charles James Phillips (15 May 1863 – 2 June 1940) of London, England, and New York City, was a philatelist highly regarded in both England where he started his philatelic career and in the United States, where he emigrated to in 1922. Baron Anthony Denis Maurice George de Worms (4 January 1869 – 11 January 1938) was an Austrian aristocrat (by courtesy) and an English philatelist. Biography Early life Anthony Denis Maurice George de Worms was born on 4 January 1869. His father was George de Worms, 2nd Baron de Worms and his mother, Louisa de Samuel. He had a brother, Percy de Worms, and a sister, Henrietta Emmy Louisa Amelia de Worms. His paternal grandfather, Solomon Benedict de Worms, owned large plantations in Ceylon and was made a Hereditary Baron of the Austrian Empire by Franz Joseph I of Austria, and his paternal grandmother was Henrietta Samuel. Philatelic Events
Philately (; ) is the study of postage stamps and postal history. It also refers to the collection and appreciation of stamps and other philatelic products. While closely associated with stamp collecting and the study of postage, it is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. For instance, the stamps being studied may be very rare or reside only in museums. Etymology The word "philately" is the English transliteration of the French "", coined by Georges Herpin in 1864. Herpin stated that stamps had been collected and studied for the previous six or seven years and a better name was required for the new hobby than ''timbromanie'' (roughly "stamp mania"), which was disliked.Williams, L.N. & M.
