Instituto Reação
Instituto Reação is a Brazilian non-governmental organization founded in 2003 by judo Olympic medalist Flávio Canto that promotes human development and social inclusion through sports and education, especially judo. Instituto Reação works in the favelas in Rio de Janeiro including Rocinha, Pequena Cruzada, Cidade de Deus and Tubiacanga. The Institute serves about 1,000 children and young people between 4 and 25 years old, and has played a prominent role in competitions, including having helped train the current Olympic and world junior judo champion, Rafaela Silva Lopes. Flávio Canto
Flávio Vianna de Ulhôa Canto (born 16 April 1975, in Oxford, England) is a Brazilian judoka who competed in Men's 81 kg Judo. He won the bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He is the founder and president of the Instituto Reação, and also presenter of the TV shows ''Corujão do Esporte'' on TV Globo and ''Sensei'' on SporTV. Biography Flavio Canto was born in Oxford, England, where his father had a doctorate in nuclear physics. At two years old he came to Brazil and started Judo at fourteen. Favela
Favela () is an umbrella name for several types of impoverished neighborhoods in Brazil. The term, which means slum or ghetto, was first used in the Slum of Providência in the center of Rio de Janeiro in the late 19th century, which was built by soldiers who had lived under the favela trees in Bahia and had nowhere to live following the Canudos War. Some of the last settlements were called ''bairros africanos'' (African neighborhoods). Over the years, many former enslaved Africans moved in. Even before the first favela came into being, poor citizens were pushed away from the city and forced to live in the far suburbs. Rocinha
Rocinha (, ) is a favela in Brazil, located in Rio de Janeiro's South Zone between the districts of São Conrado and Gávea. Rocinha is built on a steep hillside overlooking Rio de Janeiro, and is located about one kilometre from a nearby beach. Most of the favela is on a very steep hill, with many trees surrounding it. Around 200,000 people live in Rocinha, making it the most populous in Rio de Janeiro. Although Rocinha is officially categorized as a neighbourhood, many still refer to it as a favela. It developed from a shanty town into an urbanized slum. Today, almost all the houses in Rocinha are made from concrete and brick. The Cidade de Deus (, ''City of God'') is a West Zone neighborhood of the city of Rio de Janeiro. It is also known as CDD among its inhabitants. Judo was first included in the Summer Olympic Games at the 1964 Games in Tokyo, Japan. After not being included in 1968, judo has been an Olympic sport in each Olympiad since then. Rafaela Lopes Silva (born 24 April 1992) is a Brazilian judoka. She won gold medals at the World Judo Championships of 2013 World Judo Championships – Women's 57 kg, 2013 and 2022 World Judo Championships – Women's 57 kg, 2022 and at the Judo at the 2016 Summer Olympics, 2016 Summer Olympics in the Judo at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Women's 57 kg, –57 kg weight division.
