Inquisitor General
Grand Inquisitor (, literally ''Inquisitor General'' or ''General Inquisitor'') was the highest-ranked official of the Inquisition. The title usually refers to the inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition, in charge of appeals and cases of aristocratic importance, even after the reunification of the inquisitions. Secretaries-general of the Roman Inquisition were often styled as ''Grand Inquisitor'' but the role and functions were different. The Portuguese Inquisition was headed by a Grand Inquisitor, or General Inquisitor, named by the Pope but selected by the king, always from within the royal family. The most famous Inquisitor General was the Spanish Dominican Tomás de Torquemada, who spearheaded the Spanish Inquisition. Diego Ramirez de Guzman ( –1508) became the bishop of Catania, Italy on 26 June 1500, after having been promoted previously to bishop of Lugo, Spain, on 7 February 1500. Luis Mercader Escolano (1444–1516) was the Grand Inquisitor of the Kingdom of Aragon from 1513 to 1516. Biography Luis Mercader Escolano was born in Murviedro in 1444. He was a Carthusian. The Diocese of Vic () is a Latin Church, Latin diocese of the Catholic Church with its seat in the city of Vic, Spain, Vic in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tarragona, ecclesiastical province of Tarragona in Catalonia, Spain. Juan Enguera
Juan Enguera (died 1513) was the Grand Inquisitor of the Crown of Aragon from 1507 to 1513. Biography Juan Enguera was born in Valencia in the fifteenth century. A member of the Dominican Order, Enguera rose to become a confessor of Ferdinand II of Aragon. Enguera was appointed Bishop of Vic on 19 December 1505. He was later appointed Bishop of Lleida on 9 December 1510, ''(in Latin)'' and then Bishop of Tortosa on 1 October 1512. In addition to his duties as a bishop, he was the Grand Inquisitor of the Crown of Aragon from 1507 to 1513. Enguera died in Valladolid on 14 February 1513. Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, OFM (1436 – 8 November 1517) was a Spanish cardinal, religious figure, and statesman. Starting from humble beginnings he rose to the heights of power, becoming a religious reformer, twice regent of Spain, Cardinal, Grand Inquisitor, promoter of the Crusades in North Africa, and founder of the Alcalá University. Among his intellectual accomplishments during the Renaissance in Spain, he is best known for funding the Complutensian Polyglot Bible, the first polyglot version of the entire Bible, which was Mass produced using Johannes Gutenberg's printing press. He also edited and published the first printed editions of the missal (in 1500) and the breviary (in 1502) of the Mozarabic Rite, and established a chapel with a college of thirteen priests to celebrate the Mozarabic Liturgy of the Hours and Eucharist each day in the Toledo Cathedral.
