Indianapolis Union Station—Wholesale Historic District
The Wholesale District is one of seven designated cultural districts in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. Located in the south-central quadrant of downtown Indianapolis' Mile Square, the district contains the greatest concentration of 19th-century commercial buildings in the city, including Indianapolis Union Station and the Majestic Building. Contemporary landmarks in the district include Circle Centre Mall and the Indianapolis Artsgarden. History Prior to its designation as a cultural district, the Wholesale District was one of downtown Indianapolis's most decayed and blighted areas. Around the turn of the 20th century, Indianapolis had one of the largest networks of railroads in the United States with hundreds of passenger trains arriving at Union Station daily. Circle Centre Mall is an indoor shopping mall located in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. Circle Centre Mall was opened to the public on September 8, 1995, and incorporates existing downtown structures such as the former L. S. Ayres flagship store. The mall is only anchored by the offices for ''The Indianapolis Star''. The space occupied by former anchors Carson's, Carson Pirie Scott, Regal Cinemas, and Tilt (arcade), Tilt Studio is vacant. The mall consists of 99 stores on four levels with a gross leasable area of . When first conceived in the 1980s, it was intended to contain the existing Ayres and William H. The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO) is a major American orchestra based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The largest performing arts organization in Indiana, the orchestra was founded in 1930 and is based at the Hilbert Circle Theatre in downtown Indianapolis on Monument Circle. History The orchestra was founded in 1930 by Ferdinand Schaefer, a local violin professor, with the help of Leonard A. Strauss. Strauss became the first president of the ISO. In 1937, Fabien Sevitzky was hired as the orchestra's first music director, as the musicians became fully professional, paid a weekly salary for a 20-week season. The orchestra quickly ascended to national prominence, issuing a series of phonograph recordings on RCA Victor and Capitol Records in the 1940s and early 1950s. The Omni Severin Hotel is a historic hotel, opened in 1913. It is a contributing property in the Wholesale District, Indianapolis, Indianapolis Union Station Wholesale District historic district. The hotel is located directly across Jackson Place from the Union Station (Indianapolis), Union Station head house. It is a member of Historic Hotels of America, an official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. History The Hotel Severin was constructed by Henry Severin Jr., with help from Indianapolis Motor Speedway founders Carl G. Fisher and James A. Allison.
