Port Vila ( ; ), or simply Vila (), is the capital of Vanuatu and its largest city. It is on the island of Efate, in Shefa Province. The population was 49,034 as of the 2020 census. In 2020, the population of Port Vila formed 16.3% of the country's population. Located on the east coast of the island of Efate, Port Vila is the economic and commercial centre of Vanuatu. The mayor is Jenny Regenvanu of the Land and Justice Party, the first woman to hold the position, elected in August 2024. Vanuatu Cricket, officially the Vanuatu Cricket Association, is the national governing body of the sport of cricket in Vanuatu. Its current headquarters is in Port Vila, Vanuatu. Vanuatu Cricket Association is Vanuatu's representative at the International Cricket Council and is an associate member and has been a member of that body since 2009. It is also a member of the East Asia-Pacific Cricket Council. The Senior Men's Team achieved Associate status with the ICC after winning the prestigious ICC EAP Cup in 2009 (undefeated). The 2019 ICC Women's Qualifier EAP was a cricket tournament that was held in Vanuatu in May 2019. The matches in the tournament were played as Women's Twenty20 Internationals (WT20Is), with the top team progressing to both the 2019 ICC Women's World Twenty20 Qualifier and the 2021 Women's Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournaments. The opening days of fixtures saw Papua New Guinea win both their matches, with Ravina Oa taking a five-wicket haul against Vanuatu in the first match, and Natasha Ambo taking five wickets in the second match, against Indonesia. In the final match of the tournament, Papua New Guinea beat Samoa by seven wickets to win the EAP Qualifier. Sport In Vanuatu
Sports in Vanuatu are played throughout the country. Football (soccer) Association football is the most popular sport in the country. In 1988, Vanuatu became a member of FIFA and the OFC. Vanuatu has one of the most advanced technical programs in Oceania, particularly at youth level. The Melanesian nation was chosen as one of six countries globally for a FIFA pilot project whereby players are identified at a young age and selected to train and stay full-time at the national academy. As part of that two-year program for players aged 15–17, consideration is given to continuing school or vocational education. The men's national football team has never qualified for the World Cup.
