Iloilo United Royals
The Iloilo United Royals were a Filipino professional basketball team based in Passi, Iloilo. The team last competed in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL). The team most recently played its home games at Passi City Arena. The team joined the league in the 2019–20 season and last took part in the 2024 season. History JJ Javelosa, who would later own the team, and basketball coach Nash Racela conceived of an idea for an Iloilo team in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) while playing golf. Racela brought in his co-coach Eric Gonzales to the nascent team. Javelosa, would have tapped his son Jay, who was then playing college basketball for the Ateneo Blue Eagles, while Racela would have recruited from his varsity FEU Tamaraws team. MPBL founder Manny Pacquiao approved of the plan, but was almost shelved when a sponsor backed out. The elder Javelosa eventually found new sponsors, and named the team the Iloilo United Royals. Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League
The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) is a men's regional professional basketball league in the Philippines composed of 30 teams. Founded in 2017 by eight-division boxing world champion and then-Senator Manny Pacquiao, the MPBL is not intended to be a competitor to the top-flight Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), but rather to provide a gateway for local, homegrown talents to showcase their skills. The league uses a home-and-away format, similar to the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association. The MPBL started an amateur league before being granted professional status by the Games and Amusements Board. Due to Pacquiao's role in the league, it has also been referred to as Manny Pacquiao's Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League. MPBL All-Star Game
The MPBL All-Star Game is an exhibition game hosted by the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League and showcases 30 of the league's star players. It is the main event of the greater MPBL All-Star Day, held during the latter part of the regular season alongside a series of pre-game events within the same day. The first All-Star Game was played at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on March 2, 2019. The two teams, representing the two divisions (North Division (MPBL), North and South Division (MPBL), South), are composed of fifteen players from the representing division. The head coaches of the team with the best record in each division leading up to All-Star gameday are chosen to coach their respective teams. Japs Cuan
John Paul Cuan is a Filipino professional basketball coach and former collegiate player who is currently an assistant coach for the UST Growling Tigers of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). Career Playing Cuan played for UST Growling Tigers under Pido Jarencio, and one of his notable years with the team was playing in the finals against Ateneo Blue Eagles in 2006. They won the finals series even though they lost in game 1, the championship was won, as the last was in 1996. In 2008, in only the third game of the Tigers, he suffered a torn meniscus on his knee which required surgery. He was able to return in the second round while playing limited minutes. Ronald "Mac" Cuan is a Filipino professional basketball coach and former collegiate player who is currently an assistant coach for the Iloilo United Royals in the MPBL.
