''Illywhacker'' is a novel by Australian writer Peter Carey. It was published in 1985 to commercial and critical success, winning a number of awards and being short-listed for the Booker Prize. Considered metafiction or magical realism, the novel is narrated by liar, trickster, and confidence man Herbert Badgery, the " illywhacker" of the title, and tells the story of his picaresque life in Australia between 1919 and the 1980s. Peter Carey (novelist)
Peter Philip Carey AO (born 7 May 1943) is an Australian novelist. He is one of only five writers to have won the Booker Prize twice—the others being J. G. Farrell, J. M. Coetzee, Hilary Mantel and Margaret Atwood. Carey won his first Booker Prize in 1988, for '' Oscar and Lucinda'', and won his second Booker Prize in 2001, for '' True History of the Kelly Gang''. In May 2008, he was nominated for the Best of the Booker Prize. Carey has won the Miles Franklin Award three times, and is frequently named as Australia's next contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature. ''Bliss'' is the first novel by Australian writer Peter Carey. Published in 1981, the book won that year's Miles Franklin Award. Plot Written as a dark, comic fable, the story concerns an advertising executive, Harry Joy, who briefly 'dies' of a myocardial infarction, heart attack. On being resuscitated, he realizes that the life he has previously drifted amiably through is in fact Hell – Literal and figurative language, literally so to Harry. His wife is unfaithful, while his son is selling drugs, and his daughter is a Communism, communist selling herself to buy them. The Barbara Ramsden Award was administered by Fellowship of Australian Writers and awarded annually to an author and editor in recognition of the efforts of both parties to produce a quality fiction or non-fiction book. Victorian Premier's Literary Award
The Victorian Premier's Literary Awards were created by the Victorian Government with the aim of raising the profile of contemporary creative writing and Australia's publishing industry. As of 2013, it is reportedly Australia's richest literary prize with the top winner receiving 125,000 and category winners 25,000 each. The awards were established in 1985 by John Cain, Premier of Victoria, to mark the centenary of the births of Vance and Nettie Palmer, two of Australia's best-known writers and critics who made significant contributions to Victorian and Australian literary culture. From 1986 till 1997, the awards were presented as part of the Melbourne Writers Festival. In 1997 their administration was transferred to the State Library of Victoria.
