Ian Painter
Ian John Painter (born 28 December 1964) is an English former professional footballer who played for Stoke City and Coventry City. He made 116 appearances in the Football League. Career Painter was born in Wombourne, Staffordshire, England, but graduated from Stoke's youth system at the Victoria Ground, making his debut one day before his 18th birthday against Everton in 1982. He became a key player for The Potters at a time when the club was struggling both on and off the field, earning an England under-21 call up in 1983, and also became the club's top scorer in the 1984–85 season. However Stoke were relegated with just 17 points and new manager Mick Mills decided Painter was surplus to requirements and let him join Coventry City for a fee of £85,000. His time at Coventry was overshadowed by injuries and made only three appearances before he decided to retire from football at the age of 23. Wombourne
Wombourne is a large village and civil parish located in the district of South Staffordshire, in the county of Staffordshire, England. It is 4 miles (6 km) south-west of Wolverhampton and just outside the county and conurbation of the West Midlands. Local services are run by a parish council. At the 2001 census it had a population of 13,691, increasing to 14,157 at the 2011 Census. Etymology and usage The Old English word ''burna'' signifies a stream, and a stream is a notable feature of the village. Formerly the village name was thought to mean "Womb Stream", or stream in a hollow, because this is a reasonable description of the situation. However, more recent scholarship explains the name as meaning a Crooked Stream, which is at least as good a description. ''Burna'' was one of the terms for a stream used in the earliest Anglo-Saxon place names, and the stream was presumably itself called the Wom Bourn. Mick Mills
Michael Dennis Mills MBE (born 4 January 1949) is an English former footballer who played for Ipswich Town, Southampton and Stoke City. He managed Stoke City, Colchester United and Birmingham City. During his career he achieved Ipswich Town's record number of appearances and captained England at the 1982 World Cup. He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1984 New Year Honours, for "services to association football". Club career Mills joined Portsmouth as a schoolboy, but the club abandoned its youth system, forcing him to look for a new club to begin his career. Ipswich Town took him on and he made his debut for the first team in 1966, aged just 17, in a 5–2 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Football League Second Division was the second level division in the English football league system between 1892 and 1992. Following the foundation of the FA Premier League, the Football League divisions were renumbered and the third tier became known as the Football League Second Division. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981. After the creation of the Premier League, the name First Division was given to the second-tier division (from 1992). The name ceased to exist after the 2003–04 First Division season.
