Ian Hampshire
Ian James "Bluey" Hampshire (9 May 1948 – 2 September 2018) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong and Footscray. He played as a ruckman. Recruited from Portland to Geelong, Hampshire made his VFL debut in 1968 and played with the club for eight seasons. Portland Football Netball Cricket Club
The Portland Football Netball Cricket Club, nicknamed the ''Tigers'', is an Australian sports club based in the city of Portland, Victoria. The club's football and netball teams currently compete in the Hampden Football Netball League, with the football squad having joined it in 2013 along with the Hamilton Kangaroos. Apart from football and netball, the club has a cricket section which up until 2023 played in the Portland and District Cricket Association. That association amalgamated with the Hamilton and District Cricket Association ahead of the 2023-24 season. Royce Hart
Royce Desmond Hart (born 10 February 1948) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Richmond Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Regarded as one of the greatest centre half-forwards to ever play Australian rules football, Hart was a supremely gifted and courageous player with superb pack marking skills, with a trademark of leaping in from the side, and a penetrating left-foot kick. Hart was an inaugural member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame, and was elevated to Legend status in 2013. Gary Dempsey (Australian Footballer)
Gary Dempsey (born 22 November 1948) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Footscray Football Club and North Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A fine ruckman known for his strong marking, Dempsey won the Brownlow Medal in 1975 and had a total of thirteen top-10 finishes in the vote count. He is also one of a handful of players to have played at least 100 games and won a best-and-fairest award at two different clubs. Playing career Dempsey made his debut for Footscray in 1967. In 1969, he spent six weeks in hospital after being badly burnt by a bushfire near his home in Truganina and was told he would never play football again. Despite this, he defied the odds to return to the playing field and then win his first club best-and-fairest award in 1970. 1968 VFL Season
The 1968 VFL season was the 72nd season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 15 April until 28 September, and comprised a 20-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Carlton Football Club for the ninth time, after it defeated by three points in the 1968 VFL Grand Final. Background In 1968, the VFL competition consisted of twelve teams of 18 on-the-field players each, plus two substitute players, known as the 19th man and the 20th man. A player could be substituted for any reason; however, once substituted, a player could not return to the field of play under any circumstances. Teams played each other in a home-and-away season of 20 rounds; matches 12 to 20 were the "home-and-way reverse" of matches 1 to 9.
