ICODA
International Center on Deafness and the Arts (ICODA) is a non-profit organization based in Northbrook, Illinois, US. Patricia Scherer is the founder and president. Founded in 1973, the organization is a registered nonprofit, tax exempt, 501(c)(3) corporation. History The Center on Deafness was founded in 1973 by Patricia Scherer, and became the International Center On Deafness and the Arts in July 1997. ICODA Programs CenterLight Family Theatre performs using American Sign Language and Spoken English concurrently during the performance. Story-N-Sign Touring Theatre was created in 1995. Performers who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Hearing perform short stories, poems and mimes in American Sign Language and Spoken English. Northbrook is a suburb of Chicago, located at the northern edge of Cook County, Illinois, United States, on the border of Lake County, Illinois, Lake County. It is part of a collection of upscale residential communities north of Chicago and belongs to Northfield Township and the greater North Shore. When incorporated in 1901, the village was known as Shermerville in honor of Frederick Schermer, who donated the land for its first Northbrook station, train station. Oakton College is a public community college with campuses in Des Plaines, Illinois and Skokie, Illinois. It was established in 1969 in Morton Grove, Illinois and moved to its current locations in 1980. History Oakton College opened in 1969 as Oakton Community College in former industrial buildings at Oakton and Nagle in Morton Grove. Notable Deaf people are typically defined as those who have profound hearing loss in both ears as a result of either acquired or congenital hearing loss. Such people may be associated with Deaf culture. Deafness (little to no hearing) is distinguished from partial hearing loss or damage (such as tinnitus), which is less severe impairment in one or both sides. The definition of deafness varies across countries, cultures, and time, though the World Health Organization classes profound hearing loss as the failure to hear a sound of 90 decibels or louder in a hearing test.
