IBM 5256
The IBM 5280 was a data entry system introduced by IBM in 1980 that expanded on the earlier IBM 3740 of 1973. The 3740 was essentially a computer terminal that recorded a user's data entry onto an 8-inch floppy disk instead of older storage media like punch cards or paper tape. The 5280 expanded on this model by including a complete low-end computer system that could be customized for different roles, ran faster, had more storage both internally and on the disks, and a better display. It also sported an enhanced styling, looking more like a contemporary all-in-one microcomputer compared to the 3740 large desk-like appearance. IBM 3740
IBM 3740 Data Entry System was a data entry system that was announced by IBM in 1973. It recorded data on an 8" diskette, a new recording medium from IBM, for fast, flexible, efficient data entry to either high-production, centralized operations or to decentralized, remote operations. The "Diskette" was more commonly known as an 8-inch floppy disk. It was succeeded in 1980 by the IBM 5280 which added full programmability. The term "IBM 3740" is sometimes used metonymically to refer to the floppy disk recording format it introduced, which was the direct ancestor of the IBM PC floppy format which would become the industry standard in the 1980s and 1990s. RPG is a high-level programming language for business applications, introduced in 1959 for the IBM 1401. It is most well known as the primary programming language of IBM's midrange computer product line, including the IBM i operating system. RPG has traditionally featured a number of distinctive concepts, such as the program cycle, and the column-oriented syntax. IBM 5250 is a family of block-oriented terminals originally introduced with the IBM System/34 midrange computer systems in 1977. It also connects to the later System/36, System/38, and IBM AS/400 systems, and to IBM Power Systems systems running IBM i, as well as the Series/1 minicomputer. The IBM AS/400 (Application System/400) is a family of midrange computers from IBM announced in June 1988 and released in August 1988. It was the successor to the System/36 and System/38 platforms, and ran the OS/400 operating system. IBM System/34
The IBM System/34 was an IBM midrange computer introduced in 1977. It was withdrawn from marketing in February 1985. It was a multi-user, multi-tasking successor to the single-user System/32. It included two processors, one based on the System/32 and the second based on the System/3. Like the System/32 and the System/3, the System/34 was primarily programmed in the IBM RPG, RPG II language.
