''Huns within our gates'' ( 1918) is a silent World War I propaganda film, starring Derwent Hall Caine and Valda Valkyrien. Produced by the Arrow Film Corporation, the cast, characters and plot were used in The Crusher (1917 film), The Crusher (1917). Derwent Hall Caine
Sir Derwent Hall Caine, 1st Baronet (12 September 18912 December 1971) was a British actor, publisher and Labour politician. Biography Caine was the son of British novelist Hall Caine and his wife Mary Chandler. He was born at Keswick in Cumberland, and so derived his name from the nearby lake of Derwent Water. Valda Valkyrien
Valda Valkyrien (born Adele Frede; September 30, 1895 – October 22, 1956) was a Danish silent film actress. Early life and career Born in Reykjavík, Iceland, Valkyrien was born Adele Frede; although she may have been a student at the Royal Danish Ballet, she was neither a prima ballerina nor premiere danseuse, as she later claimed. She married Danish nobleman and author, Baron Hrolf von Dewitz, and in 1912 began appearing in motion pictures for Nordisk Film productions of Copenhagen, where she was a bit part player or, at best, a supporting cast member in at least six silent films, including one feature-length production, but not a star. Of these films at least one, ''Den Stærkeste'' (Vanquished), was released in the United States by the Great Northern Film Company, the Nordisk Film subsidiary in New York City. Arrow Film Corporation
Arrow Film Corporation was an American film production and distribution company during the silent era from 1915 to 1926. An independent company it operated alongside the established studios. Originally formed to supply films for Pathé Exchange, the company quickly separated and concentrated on a mixture of medium and low-budget productions.Ward p. 20. The company was sometimes referred to as Arrow Pictures. Silent Film
A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience. The Crusher (1917 Film)
''The Crusher'' (1917) is a silent film, starring Derwent Hall Caine and Valda Valkyrien. Produced by the F. W. Stewart Co., at the Wharton Studios, under the directorship of J. K. Holbrook. Plot Arthur Morgan, an impulsive, reckless young Southerner, has invented an engine for submarine or airship. He gets in trouble in his old home and goes to New York to perfect his invention. He falls in love with a woman who is head of a foreign spy system. Her agent steals the formula and escapes to Europe. Arthur is crushed in spirit and in desperation tries to take his own life. The story is a parallel to the operations of extracting gold from the quartz. Morgan being the quartz, and New York City the crusher, and Dorothy Waring the amalogan which collects the grain of gold from the worthless crystal and makes it of value. A lost film is a feature or short film that no longer exists in any studio archive, private collection, public archive or the U.S. Library of Congress. Conditions During most of the 20th century, U.S. copyright law required at least one copy of every American film to be deposited at the Library of Congress at the time of copyright registration, but the Librarian of Congress was not required to retain those copies: "Under the provisions of the act of March 4, 1909, authority is granted for the return to the claimant of copyright of such copyright deposits as are not required by the Library."
