Hugh Tothill
Admiral Sir Hugh Henry Darby Tothill, (14 March 1865 – 25 September 1927) was a Royal Navy officer who served as captain in World War I and went on to become commander-in-chief of East Indies Station following his promotion to admiral. Naval career Tothill was promoted to lieutenant in 1888, commander on 31 December 1900, and subsequently to captain in 1906. He was in command of the training brig HMS ''Nautilus'' from 20 January 1898 until 31 December 1900. In March 1900 he re-commissioned the brig at Devonport with a complement of boys for the annual training cruise. After promotion to commander, he was in January 1901 posted to the armoured cruiser HMS Australia, serving in home waters. Having received command of by 1908 and by 1911, he served in World War I, commanding at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. Francis Dodd (artist)
Francis Edgar Dodd (29 November 1874 – 7 March 1949) was a British portrait painter, landscape artist and printmaker. Biography Dodd was born in Holyhead, Anglesey, Wales, the son of a Wesleyan minister. He trained at the Glasgow School of Art alongside Muirhead Bone, who married Dodd's sister, Gertrude. At Glasgow, Dodd won the Haldane Scholarship in 1893 and then travelled around France, Italy and later Spain. Dodd returned to England in 1895 and settled in Manchester, becoming friends with Charles Holden, before moving to Blackheath in London in 1904. During World War I, in 1916, he was appointed an official war artist by Charles Masterman, the head of the War Propaganda Bureau, WPB. Serving on the Western Front, he produced more than 30 portraits of senior military figures. However, he also earned a considerable peacetime reputation for the quality of his watercolours and portrait commissions. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". Admiral Sir Lewis Clinton-Baker (16 March 1866 – 12 December 1939) was a Royal Navy officer who served as Commander-in-Chief, East Indies Station. History Clinton-Baker joined the Royal Navy in 1879 He took part in the bombardment of Alexandria in 1882 and went to command HMS ''Gibraltar'' during the Second Boer War. He was promoted to Commander on 1 January 1901 and commanded HMS ''Berwick'' from 1908. He served in World War I as Captain of HMS ''Hercules'', which he commanded at the Battle of Jutland in 1916, and then as Captain of HMS ''Benbow'' from later that year; he then took responsibility for laying a mine barrage across the North Sea from a base at Grangemouth. He became Second-in-Command of the Second Battle Squadron in 1919, Admiral Superintendent of Chatham Dockyard in 1920 and Commander-in-Chief, East Indies Station in 1921. Admiral Sir Ernest Frederick Augustus Gaunt, (25 March 1865 – 20 April 1940) was an Australian-born Royal Navy officer who went on to be Commander-in-Chief, Western Approaches. Naval career Gaunt was born in Beechworth, Victoria, Australia, the son of William Henry Gaunt and Elizabeth Mary Palmer. Gaunt joined the Royal Navy in 1878 at the age of 13. In 1881, he was a midshipman in HMS ''Wolverine'', by 1891 he was a lieutenant on ''Belleisle'', and by 1896 he was 1st Lieutenant on the armoured cruiser HMS ''Narcissus''. Promoted to Commander on 30 June 1898, Gaunt was, in 1898 and 1899, 1st Commissioner for Weihawei and Administrator for Liukungtao, China.
