Hornell is a city in Steuben County, New York, United States. The population was 8,259 at the 2020 census. The city is named after the Hornell family, early settlers. The City of Hornell is surrounded by Town of Hornellsville. Hornell is about south of Rochester and is near the western edge of Steuben County. Hornell is nicknamed the "Maple City" after the large maple trees that once grew throughout the town and covered the surrounding hills of the Canisteo Valley. Hornell has the largest Saint Patrick's Day parade and celebration in the area, bringing many out to welcome spring and show their green. Hornellsville is a town in Steuben County, New York, United States. The population, not counting the city of Hornell, was 4,039 at the 2020 census. The name is taken from a prominent pioneer family. The Town of Hornellsville is at the western border of the county, and surrounds the city of Hornell. Until 1906, the city of Hornell was named Hornellsville. The name Hornellsville is only used in real estate or legal contexts, but rarely in conversation. This is because Hornell is much more frequently mentioned, and its boundaries are quite different. Hornell Public Library
Hornell Public Library is a historic library building located at Hornell in Steuben County, New York, USA. It was designed in 1908 and dedicated in 1911, with funds provided by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. It is one of 3,000 such libraries constructed between 1885 and 1919. Carnegie provided $25,000 toward the construction of the Hornell library. It is a one-story, five bay structure built of white pressed brick with masonry trim. Hornell Armory
Hornell Armory is a historic National Guard armory building located at Hornell in Steuben County, New York. It is a brick and stone castle-like structure built in 1894. It was designed by architect Isaac G. Perry. The three-story main structure has a four-story round corner tower. Attached to the main structure are an additional pair of two-story corner towers. Extending from the main structure is a long two-story wing with a gable roof and corner stair tower. WWHG (105.9 FM) is a commercial mainstream rock radio station licensed to Evansville, Wisconsin and serving the areas of Madison and Janesville. The station is owned by Scott Thompson, through licensee Big Radio, and began a new rock music format as "105-9 The Hog" on January 13, 2007, after several years with a Rhythmic Top 40 format. History After being instituted a construction permit as WEBU in 1988, the station signed on with an adult contemporary format, and then classic rock, all under the call letters WMJB. After stunting with TV theme songs, the station flipped to rhythmic adult contemporary in the fall of 1997. Canisteo (village), New York
Canisteo () is a village in Steuben County, New York, United States. The population was 2,270 at the 2010 census. The Village of Canisteo is in the northwest corner of the Town of Canisteo and is southeast of Hornell. History Native Americans Canisteo existed as a community prior to European settlement, but there are different versions of who the inhabitants were and what the settlement consisted of. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Canisteo was in a remote area, between territories of the Seneca and Delaware Indians, "a sort of No Man's Land". There are references to a "Kanestio castle", but differing accounts of what it was, or even what was meant by "castle". One modern writer calls it "mysterious", noting that "facts about tare few and difficult to come by."
