Horn Island Airport is an airport on Horn Island in the Torres Strait, Queensland, Australia. World War II The Civil Constructional Corps and the Department of Main Roads began construction of an advanced operational airbase on the island during World War II, commencing in 1940. RAAF Base Horn Island was completed in 1941 and was used as a staging base for Allied aircraft moving between Australia and New Guinea. The Shire of Torres is a local government area located in Far North Queensland, Australia, covering large sections of the Torres Strait Islands and the northern tip of Cape York Peninsula north of 11°S latitude. It holds two distinctions—it is the northernmost Local Government Area in Australia, and is the only one to abut an international border – it is at one point just from Papua New Guinea. Airlines and destinations Accident and incident On 16 January 1999, Uzu Air Britten-Norman Islander VH-XFF was operating a passenger and cargo flight from Horn Island, NT with three passengers and one pilot, when on final approach the pilot noticed a vehicle was parked on the runway with nobody attending to it. The pilot initiated a go-around. Witnesses reported the aircraft entered a shallow climb before pitching sharply right and crashing into a tidal flat. The pilot and two passengers were killed. The surviving passenger was seriously injured.
