Hoogstraten () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp. The municipality comprises Hoogstraten, Meer, Meerle, Meersel-Dreef, Minderhout and Wortel (Meersel-Dreef includes the northernmost point in Belgium). Hoogstraten (originally ''Hoogstraeten'') has a population of over 20,000, and lies in Flanders at the northern border of Belgium within an enclave surrounded on three sides by the Netherlands. Today, about 15% percent of the population consists of Dutch people. The town is named after the ''hoge straat'' or "high road" – a military highway that linked the old towns of Antwerp and 's-Hertogenbosch. In the town's early days, little trade existed. Villages and towns produced just enough for their own support, with little or no surplus to be 'sold' to other areas. Thus, most travelers along this high road were soldiers and armies. Mutiny Of Hoogstraten
The Mutiny of Hoogstraten (1 September 1602 – 18 May 1604) was the longest mutiny by soldiers of the Army of Flanders during the Eighty Years' War. Frederick Van den Berg's attempt to end the mutiny by force, with a siege to recapture the town, ended in defeat at the hands of an Anglo-Dutch army under of Maurice of Nassau. Meersel-Dreef
Meersel-Dreef is a village in the Belgian municipality of Hoogstraten in the province of Antwerp, Belgium. Meersel-Dreef is the northernmost point of Belgium, and directly borders the Netherlands. Name "Meersel" is derived from the Germanic "mariski", meaning land along a watercourse, or from "mari", meaning lake, and "sali", meaning house. History Meersel-Dreef was originally two villages, Meersel and Dreef. They have been inhabited since at least the Middle Ages. The two villages grew together over time around the Capuchin monastery, which was built in 1687 near the river Mark. It was founded by Jan de Wyse, a wealthy merchant from Breda, on land donated by Maria Gabriella de Lalaing, Countess of Hoogstraten. In 1223 there was already a chapel in Meersel. Meer is a village in the Belgian municipality of Hoogstraten in the province of Antwerp. As of 2021, it has 3,542 inhabitants. History The village was first mentioned around 1200 as Mera, Mere. Minderhout
Minderhout is a village in the Belgian municipality of Hoogstraten in the province of Antwerp close to the border with the Netherlands. As of 2021, it has about 4,420 inhabitants. History The village was first mentioned in 1238 as Minrehout, and means "the smaller forest". Minderhout was founded from Baarle .The Thorn Abbey used to have many possession in Minderhout, and the village and neighbouring Castelré originally belonged to the Land of Breda. During the 14th century, Minderhout became the property of the Lords of Hoogstraten, but Castelré remained with Breda, therefore, the original area was cut in two. In 1794, it became an independent municipality. Minderhout would remain independent until 1977 when it was merged into Hoogstraten. Meerle is a village in the Belgian municipality of Hoogstraten in the province of Antwerp. As of 2021, it has about 3,871 inhabitants. History The village was first mentioned in 1266 as Meerle, and means "open forest near a lake/pond". The Thorn Abbey used to have many possessions in Meerle, and the village originally belonged to the Land of Breda. Elisabeth Van Culemborg
Elisabeth of Culemborg (30 March 1475, the former slot of Hoogstraten - 9 December 1555, Culemborg), nicknamed 'Lady Elizabeth ('Vrouwe Elisabeth') was the last sovereign lord or lady of the fiefdom of Culemborg (promoted to a county by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor shortly before her death), from 1504 until 1555. Antoon I Van Lalaing
Antoine I de Lalaing (1480–1540), 1st count of Hoogstraten and of Culemborg, was a Hainautese nobleman who held various offices in the court of the Dukes of Burgundy. Life De Lalaing was a son of Joost de Lalaing and Bonne van Viefville. He married Elisabeth van Culemborg, first lady-in-waiting to Margaret of Austria, still exists in the choir of the church if St.Catherine at Hoogstraten. It was from her that De Lalaing inherited the titles of Hoogstraten and Culemborg. The marriage remained childless. In 1501 he was chamberlain at the court of Philip the Handsome. Later, in 1510, he was Counsellor and Chamberlain to the young Charles of Luxemburg, later emperor Charles V. Wortel, Belgium
Wortel is a village in the Belgian municipality of Hoogstraten. As of 2021, it has 1,844 inhabitants. The toponym means carrot or root in Dutch. Wortel was established in the early 19th century by the Society of Benevolence as a farming colony for the able-bodied working poor. It was meant to provide employment during a time when poverty rates were very high in the Low Countries. A beguinage, from the French term ''béguinage'', is an architectural complex which was created to house beguines: lay religious women who lived in community without taking vows or retiring from the world. The Duchy of Brabant was a State of the Holy Roman Empire established in 1183.
