SSCV ''Hermod'' was a semi-submersible crane vessel operated by Heerema Marine Contractors. History Semi submersible crane vessel (SSCV) ''Hermod'' was constructed in 1979 by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. ''Hermod'' and sister vessel, ''Balder'' were the world's first semi-submersible crane vessels. In the early 1980s these vessels set several lift records while operating in the North Sea. ''Hermod'' was retired at the end of 2017. Hermóðr
Hermóðr (Old Norse: , "war-spirit";Orchard (1997:83). anglicized as Hermod) is a figure in Norse mythology, a son of the god Odin and brother of Baldr. He is often considered the messenger of the gods. Attestations ''Prose Edda'' Hermóðr appears distinctly in section 49 of the ''Prose Edda'' book ''Gylfaginning''. There, it is described that the gods were speechless and devastated at the death of Baldr, unable to react due to their grief. Heerema Marine Contractors
Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) is a contractor headquartered in the Netherlands most notable for operation of three of the largest crane vessels in the offshore industry. History Heerema Marine Contractors was formed in 1948 by Pieter Schelte Heerema as a small construction company providing oilfield platforms in Venezuela. In the 1960s the company focused on the North Sea offshore developments. The company developed crane vessels to lift large offshore platforms and modules. The ship shaped crane vessel ''Challenger'' was equipped to lift 800 t. The need for large stable crane vessels to operate in the North Sea environment lead the company to develop the first large semi-submersible crane vessels. A Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) is effectively a maritime object's international ''maritime telephone number'', a temporarily assigned UID, issued by that object's current flag state, (unlike an IMO, which is a global forever UID). A crane vessel, crane ship or floating crane is a ship with a crane specialized in lifting heavy loads. The largest crane vessels are used for offshore construction. DCV ''Balder'' is a deepwater construction vessel (DCV) operated by Heerema Marine Contractors. History The ''Balder'' was constructed in 1978 as semi-submersible crane vessel by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. The Sikorsky S-61L and S-61N are civil variants of the Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King, SH-3 Sea King military helicopter.
