Charles Camille Heidsieck
Charles Camille Heidsieck (1822–1893) was a French Champagne merchant who founded the Champagne firm ''Charles Heidsieck'' in 1851. He is credited with popularizing Champagne in the United States and was known as "Champagne Charlie" during his stay. During the American Civil War Heidsieck was imprisoned under suspicion of being a spy for the French government and the Confederacy. Charles Heidsieck is the smallest of the Grandes Marques champagne Houses. Based in the Reims region of Champagne, it is one of the best-known producers for both vintage and non-vintage ''cuvée''. It has been part of EPI group since 2011. The house was founded in 1851 by the French champagne maker Charles Camille Heidsieck, who became known as Champagne Charlie. History Charles Heidsieck was born in 1822 into an eminent Reims family whose wine-making traditions date back to Florens-Louis Heidsieck (see Heidsieck & Co). In 1851, at age 29, he founded a wine house (Maison) bearing his own name. He began to sell his champagne abroad, starting in Belgium and in England, and in 1852 he travelled to the United States, becoming the first merchant to market his own champagne there. Éric Heidsieck
Éric Charles Heidsieck (born 21 August 1936) is a French classical pianist. Biography Born in Reims, Heidsieck gave his first recital at the age of nine and his first concert with orchestra a year later. He studied with Marcel Ciampi then Alfred Cortot and followed Wilhelm Kempff's lessons on Beethoven. In 1959, he won the Grand Prix du Disque (EMI) for the recording of Mozart's Concerto No. 21 and No. 24. The following year, he and his wife Tania, also a pianist, founded a duo that shone on stages around the world. In 1969, Heidsieck was the first French pianist of the 20th century to give, by memory and in public, Beethoven's 32 Sonatas, which he recorded with EMI Classics between 1970 and 1974 and again ten years later, then in 1997. Florens-Louis Heidsieck (1749–1828) was the founder of the Champagne house Heidsieck & Co from which later Piper-Heidsieck was spun off, and which was the start of the Heidsieck Champagne clan. Heidsieck was the son of a Lutheran minister from Westphalia, and had moved to Reims to work as a cloth merchant. Heidsieck & Co "Monopole" is a champagne (wine), champagne house located in the Champagne (wine region), Champagne region of France. History It was founded in 1785 by Florens-Louis Heidsieck. Following the death of the founder in 1828, the successors were his relatives Henri-Louis Walbaum, Frédéric-Auguste Delius and Christian Heidsieck. In 1838 after several disagreements, the three nephews decide to part ways. Henri Louis Walbaum (1813–1883) continued the business alone, joining forces with his brother-in-law Auguste Heidsieck (1796–1870). The company name therefore changed to "Walbaum Heidsieck & Co." In 1860 Henri Louis Walbaum and Auguste Heidsieck established the trademark "Monopole".
