Healthcare In Kent
Healthcare in Kent has, from 1 July 2022, been mainly the responsibility of the Kent & Medway Integrated Care Board. Certain specialised services are directly commissioned by NHS England, coordinated through the South East integrated regional team. Some NHS England structures are aligned on a Kent and Medway basis, others on a South East basis and there is liaison with London to provide many tertiary (highly specialised) healthcare services. History From 1947 to 1965 NHS services in Kent were managed by the South-East Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board (RHB). In 1974 the boards were abolished and replaced by regional health authorities (RHA). The whole of Kent came under the South East Metropolitan RHA. Integrated Care System
In England, an integrated care system (ICS) is a statutory partnership of organisations who plan, buy, and provide health and care services in their geographical area. The organisations involved include the NHS, local authorities, voluntary and charity groups, and independent care providers. The NHS Long Term Plan of January 2019 called for the whole of England to be covered by ICSs by April 2021. On 1 July 2022, ICSs replaced clinical commissioning groups in England. Statutory bodies The Health and Care Act 2022 put these systems on a statutory basis, each with an approved constitution. On 1 July 2022, a total of 42 ICSs became statutory. There are more than 70 performance metrics by which they are judged, grouped into six "oversight themes": quality, access and outcomes, preventing ill health and reducing inequalities, leadership, people, and finances. St George’s Hospital
St George's Hospital is a large teaching hospital in Tooting, London. Founded in 1733, it is one of the UK's largest teaching hospitals and one of the largest hospitals in Europe. It is run by the St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It shares its main hospital site in Tooting in the London Borough of Wandsworth, with St George's, University of London, which trains NHS staff and carries out advanced medical research. Clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) were NHS organisations set up by the Health and Social Care Act 2012 to organise the delivery of NHS services in each of their local areas in England. On 1 July 2022 they were abolished and replaced by Integrated care systems as a result of the Health and Care Act 2022. Establishment The announcement that GPs would take over this commissioning role was made in the 2010 white paper "Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS". This was part of the government's stated desire to create a clinically-driven commissioning system that was more sensitive to the needs of patients. Medway NHS Trust is an NHS foundation trust based in Kent which runs Medway Maritime Hospital. History The trust was established as Medway NHS Trust on 1 November 1993, and became operational on 1 April 1994. General Medical Services
General medical services (GMS) is the range of healthcare that is provided by general practitioners (GPs or family doctors) as part of the National Health Service in the United Kingdom. The NHS specifies what GPs, as independent contractors, are expected to do and provides funding for this work through arrangements known as the General Medical Services Contract. Today, the GMS contract is a UK-wide arrangement with minor differences negotiated by each of the four UK health departments. In 2013 60% of practices had a GMS contract as their principle contract. Demelza Hospice Care For Children
Demelza Hospice Care for Children is a Children's hospice and a registered charity (no. 1039561) based in Kent, England, providing palliative, respite, end-of-life and bereavement care to life-limited children and young adults, and their families. The organisation carries the name of Demelza Phillips, who died from a brain tumour at the age of 24. Demelza had worked at Acorns Children’s Hospice in Birmingham and her parents, impressed by the work they had seen there, wanted to establish a children’s hospice in the South-East of England. The Five Year Forward View was produced by NHS England in October 2014 under the leadership of Simon Stevens as a planning document. Publication and reception It received praise for brevity, being only 39 pages, and lacking the illustrations which had graced its predecessors. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department of Health and Social Care of the United Kingdom.
