Hawthorne Ferry Wharf
Hawthorne ferry wharf is a heritage-listed ferry wharf located on the southern side of the Brisbane River serving the Brisbane suburb of Hawthorne in Queensland, Australia. It is served by RiverCity Ferries' CityCat services. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 2003. History Hawthorne ferry wharf was built in 1925 by the Brisbane City Council to a design prepared earlier for the Balmoral Shire Council previously responsible for the efficient servicing of several ferry routes across the Brisbane River. Since the days of the convict settlement at Moreton Bay when a punt was poled between the main settlement and the south bank of the river, ferries have been a vital transport facility for Brisbane. Hawthorne, Queensland
Hawthorne is a suburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Hawthorne had a population of 4,989 people. Geography Hawthorne is located by road east of the CBD. Toponymy There are two theories about the name of the suburb. One is that butcher William Baynes purchased land in the area in 1875 and named the area after Hawthorn in Melbourne where he lived before his arrival in Queensland in 1859. An alternative theory is that Baynes planted many hawthorne bushes in the 1850s and 1860s. History Hawthorne started as a farming district in the 1860s, and was gradually subdivided as Brisbane grew. This was helped by the introduction of ferry and tram services. In October 1885 the "Galloway's Hill Estate" was advertised to be auctioned by Arthur Martin & Co. Customs House, Brisbane
Customs House is a heritage-listed customs house at 427 Queen Street, Brisbane CBD, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Charles H McLay and built from 1886 to 1889 at a cost of £38,346 by John Petrie & Son. It was originally used for the collection of customs duty and was opened in 1889, when Queensland was a British colony, replacing the original Customs House located at Petrie Bight. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 7 February 2005. The collection of custom duties on imported products was particularly important to Queensland where the manufacturing sector was slow to develop. Brisbane was declared a port city in 1846. Brisbane tuff is a type of rock, formed as a result of a volcanic eruption. As the name suggests, it is a type of tuff found in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is a form of welded ignimbrite. Brisbane tuff comes in a variety of colours: pink, green, blue (grey) and purple. The different colours are due to the extent of oxidation of iron and manganese. 2010–2011 Queensland Floods
A series of floods hit Queensland, Australia, beginning in November 2010. The floods forced the evacuation of thousands of people from towns and cities. At least 90 towns and over 200,000 people were affected. Damage initially was estimated at around A$1 billion before it was raised to $2.38 billion. Brisbane Central Technical College is a heritage-listed technical college at 2 George Street, Brisbane City, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1911 to 1956. It became the Queensland Institute of Technology (QIT) in 1965, and then in 1987 that became the Queensland University of Technology (QUT 1987 to present). It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 27 August 1999. The College was founded in 1908, and eventually became the Queensland Institute of Technology. Leslie Corrie
Leslie Gordon Corrie (1859–1918) was an architect and the mayor of Brisbane, Queensland from 1902 to 1903. A number of his architectural works are now heritage-listed. Early life Leslie Gordon Corrie was born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1859, the son of James Afleck Corrie of Kirkcudbright and Mary Campbell of Edinburgh. He worked as an architect, first in Hobart and then in Launceston. In 1886, he moved to Brisbane. From 1888 to 1892, he was in partnership with his former employer, Henry Hunter trading as "Hunter and Corrie". From 1898 to 1905, he was in partnership with G.H.M. Addison as Addison and Corrie. At other times he had a solo practice. He was a founding member of the Queensland Institute of Architects in 1887, and was the vice president of the Institute in 1901. George Henry Male Addison
George Henry Male Addison (1857–1922) was an Australian architect and artist. Many of his buildings are now heritage-listed. Early life Addison was born on 23 March 1857 in Llanelly, Wales, the son of Edward James Addison (1820–1863), a Wesleyan minister and Jane Roswell née Male (1833–1860). His father undertook missionary work in West Africa but it damaged his health and he died in 1863 and Addison was raised by his maternal grandfather, Henry Male in Somerset. His sister, Emily Jane Addison (1855–?) worked as a governess to the family of Alexander McArthur in Brixton and, in 1834 married their son John Percival McArthur (1858–1901). Norman Park is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Norman Park had a population of 6,287 people. Geography Norman Park is located by road east of the CBD.
