Havelock Town is a neighbourhood of Colombo, Sri Lanka, part of an area zoned as ''Colombo 5''. It is located approximately 6 kilometres south of Fort, the central business district of Colombo. Havelock City, a mixed-used development in Havelock Town is to be the largest property development in Sri Lanka incorporating residential and commercial facilities. It is named after Arthur Havelock who served as the British governor of Ceylon from 1890 to 1895. A suburb (more broadly suburban area) is an area within a metropolitan area, which may include commercial and mixed-use, that is primarily a residential area. Lumbini Vidyalaya
Lumbini College (Sinhala ලුම්බිණි විද්යාලය) or Lumbini Vidyalaya is a Sinhalese mixed school located in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The school was founded in 1929 and has a current enrollment of 4,300 students from primary class to secondary. The school was named as a national school in 2009. History Lumbini College was established on 29 February 1929, as the Havelock Town Junior Mixed School, with 114 students. Although the school was a mixed school, only girls had attended. The staff consisted of the principal, D. R. Balasooriya, and three teachers. There was just a single building built from wooden planks. The school was originally situated in Skelton Road, Colombo. In 2010 the primary school section was moved to a location in Wellawatte as a result of growth in enrolments, merging with Wallawatta Maha Vidyalaya, which was renamed Lumbini College. Cinnamon Gardens ( si, කුරුඳු වත්ත ''Kurundu Vaththa'', ta, கறுவாத் தோட்டம்) is an affluent neighbourhood in Colombo, Sri Lanka located 3 kilometers south-east from Colombo's centre. Cinnamon Gardens is named from the former cinnamon plantation in this area. In the year 1789, there were of cinnamon trees in the gardens. Edward Henry Pedris Grounds
Edward Henry Pedris Grounds (also known as Edward Henry Pedris Stadium or Pedris Grounds) is a multi-purpose stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Located in the northern portion of Havelock Park, it is currently used for football, rugby union and basketball matches. Named after the national hero, Captain Duenuge Edward Henry Pedris, it is owned by the Isipathana college. History The public park was created in 1901 to honour Sir Arthur Elibank Havelock, former British Governor of Ceylon, by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC). The park became home to several sports clubs and the northern section of the park was developed by the CMC as a public sports ground and stadium. Since it was a public ground it was used as a venue for many political rallies over the years. On the occasion of unveiling ceremony of the statue in Havelock Town, then Prime Minister Ranasinghe Premadasa stated that the adjacent sports grounds should be renamed in his memory. Isipathanaramaya Temple
Isipathanaramaya Temple is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Located in Havelock Town it was built in 1916 by Duenuge Disan Pedris, a wealthy merchant, in memory of his only son Henry Pedris who was executed by British officials for alleged incitement of racial riots in 1915, which were proven false. The temple was constructed on a property that Pedris had purchased in 1905. The murals in the temple were painted by Maligawe Sarlis(1880-1955) in 1920-21. The murals have been described as "exuberant, theatrical recastings of the traditional subjects of Buddhist temple art, in a vivid realist style". In the late 1950s the Greenlands Road which located close to it was renamed Isipathana Mawatha and the Greenlands College that was located in close proximity was renamed Isipathana Maha Vidyalaya.
