Hans Capel
Hans Willem Capel (born 3 June 1936) is a Dutch theoretical physicist. He was a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Amsterdam between 1983 and 1998. Capel was born in Sceaux, France. He obtained his PhD in mathematics and physics at Leiden University in 1965 with a dissertation titled: "The hole-equivalence principle, the Van Vleck relation and the application to the theory of d-ions in Ligand fields". Capel subsequently was a lector of theoretical physics at the same university in 1970, and served as professor between 1979 and 1983. He is well known for introducing, in Statistical Physics, the ''Blume-Capel model'', describing tricritical points. Statistical Physics
Statistical physics is a branch of physics that evolved from a foundation of statistical mechanics, which uses methods of probability theory and statistics, and particularly the Mathematics, mathematical tools for dealing with large populations and approximations, in solving physical problems. It can describe a wide variety of fields with an inherently stochastic nature. Its applications include many problems in the fields of physics, biology, chemistry, and neuroscience. Its main purpose is to clarify the properties of matter in aggregate, in terms of physical laws governing atomic motion. Statistical mechanics develop the Phenomenology (particle physics), phenomenological results of thermodynamics from a probabilistic examination of the underlying microscopic systems. Tricritical Point
In condensed matter physics, dealing with the macroscopic physical properties of matter, a tricritical point is a point in the phase diagram of a system at which three-phase coexistence terminates. This definition is clearly parallel to the definition of an ordinary critical point as the point at which two-phase coexistence terminates. A point of three-phase coexistence is termed a triple point for a one-component system, since, from Gibbs' phase rule, this condition is only achieved for a single point in the phase diagram (''F'' = 2-3+1 =0). For tricritical points to be observed, one needs a mixture with more components. It can be shown that three is the ''minimum'' number of components for which these points can appear. In this case, one may have a two-dimensional region of three-phase coexistence (''F'' = 2-3+3 =2) (thus, each point in this region corresponds to a triple point).
