HMS Sans Pareil (1794)
HMS ''Sans Pareil'' ''("Without Equal")'' was an 80-gun third rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy. She was formerly the French ship ''Sans Pareil'', but was captured in 1794 and spent the rest of her career in service with the British. French service ''Sans Pareil'' was built at Brest as a , to a design by Groignard. She was launched on 8 June 1793, but spent less than a year in service with the French navy. She sailed into the Atlantic in May 1794, under the command of Captain Courand, as part of a squadron under Rear-Admiral Joseph-Marie Nielly. She was Nielly's flagship for the operation, which aimed to meet a corn convoy inbound from North America, under Pierre Jean Van Stabel. Neilly initially failed to make contact with the French convoy, but on 9 May 1794 the squadron came across a British one, escorted by , under the command of Captain Thomas Troubridge. Joseph-Marie Nielly
Joseph-Marie Nielly (1751 – 1833) was a French naval officer and admiral. Nielly was born and died in Brest. He began his career aged seven aboard the ''Formidable'', and was wounded at the Battle of Quiberon Bay, on 20 November 1759. He sailed in the Caribbean until 1769, when he joined the merchant navy. In 1774, aged 23, he received his first command of a merchantman. In 1778, he joined the French Navy as ''lieutenant de frégate''. During the Naval operations in the American Revolutionary War, he commanded the 20-gun ''Guyane'', escorting convoys. On 17 August 1778, she fought against two ships of the line, two frigates and one cutter, yet managed to escaped. After war ended, he sailed again as a merchant, and joined the Navy again in 1787 after a reform of the status of officers from the ranks and files, as a ''sous-lieutenant de vaisseau''. Lord Hugh Seymour
Vice-Admiral Lord Hugh Seymour (29 April 1759 – 11 September 1801) was a senior British Royal Navy officer of the late 18th century who was the fifth son of Francis Seymour-Conway, 1st Marquess of Hertford, and became known for being both a prominent society figure and a highly competent naval officer. He served during the American Revolutionary and French Revolutionary Wars and later in his career performed a period of shore duty on the Admiralty board. Admiral of the Fleet Richard Howe, 1st Earl Howe, (8 March 1726 – 5 August 1799) was a British naval officer. ''Gracieuse'' was a 32-gun ''Charmante''-class frigate of the French Navy. Renamed to ''Unité'' in 1793, she took part in the French Revolutionary Wars.
