Hāriata Pītini-Morēra
Hāriata Whakatau Pītini-Morēra (died 1938) was a New Zealand Māori leader, genealogist, historian and conservationist. Tipene O'Regan called her "the most important leader of Ngāti Kurī", a subtribe ( of Ngāi Tahu in the South Island. With her husband Hoani Pītini-Morēra she was responsible for the preservation of many culturally important sites through the South Island, including burial grounds. She was well regarded for her knowledge of traditional weaving and also fought to preserve harakeke-growing areas. Pītini-Morēra was born in Little River, North Canterbury, probably in 1871 or 72, to Hāriata Whakatau and John Hampstead. Ngāi Tahu and Kāti Māmoe iwi. She married Hoani Pītini-Morēra (John Beaton-Morel) around 1890. Tipene O'Regan
Sir Stephen Gerard "Tipene" O'Regan (born 23 September 1939) is a New Zealand academic, company director and former chairman of the Ngāi Tahu Māori Trust Board. Biography Early life and career O'Regan is the son of surgeon Rolland O'Regan and Rena Ruiha (''née'' Bradshaw). His mother was of the Ngāi Tahu tribe and was raised in Bluff. O'Regan was raised in Wellington. He studied at Victoria University of Wellington and teachers' college, then worked as a primary school teacher for two years. He returned to teachers' college as a lecturer in 1968 and remained in that role until 1983. In 1974, he stood alongside his father Rolland on the Labour Party ticket for the Wellington Harbour Board. He polled well but did not win a seat. He was appointed to the Ngāi Tahu Māori Trust Board in 1976. He was on the board for 22 years and was chair for 13 years. Iwi () are the largest social units in New Zealand Māori society. In Māori, roughly means or , and is often translated as "tribe". Ngāti Kurī
Ngāti Kurī is a Māori people, Māori iwi from Northland Region, Northland, New Zealand. The iwi is one of the five Muriwhenua iwi of the far north of the North Island. Ngāti Kurī trace their whakapapa (ancestry) back to Pōhurihanga, the captain of the waka (canoe), waka (canoe) Kurahaupō. ''Kurī'', in Māori, means "dog". The rohe (tribal area) of the iwi is focused on the most northern tip of the North Island and includes the Kermadec Islands, Manawatāwhi / Three Kings Islands, Cape Reinga / Te Rerenga Wairua, Ninety Mile Beach, New Zealand, Ninety Mile Beach, Parengarenga Harbour, Te Kao and Houhora.
