Hörgársveit
Hörgársveit () is a municipality located in north-central Iceland, in Northeastern Region (Iceland), Northeastern Region. Its seat is the village of Lónsbakki . History The former municipality of Hörgárbyggð was formed on 1 January 2001 by the union of the municipalities of Skriða (Skriðuhreppur ), Öxnadalur (Öxnadalshreppur ) and Glæsibær (Glæsibæjarhreppur ). In 2010 Hörgárbyggð merged with the municipality of Arnarnes (Arnarneshreppur ) to form the current municipality of Hörgársveit. Geography Located on the Eyjafjörður, to the north of Akureyri, Hörgársveit is made up of several villages, principally Þelamörk , Lónsbakki (115 inhabitants) and Hjalteyri (37 inhabitants), the seat of the former municipality of Arnarnes. Hjalteyri
Hjalteyri () is a tiny fishing village in northern Iceland in the Norðurland eystra region. Hjalteyri has 43 inhabitants and was the largest settlement in the former municipality of Arnarneshreppur before it merged to become part of Hörgársveit. Hjalteyri is on the west bank of the Eyjafjörður fjord and is one of the major fishing ports in the region. The company Fiskey originally started operations in Hjalteyri. Hjalteyri is well known because of the large herring meal and oil processing factory that the company Kveldúlfur h.f. built there in 1937. Northeast Constituency
Northeast () is one of the six multi-member constituencies of the Althing, the national legislature of Iceland. The constituency was established in 2003 following the re-organisation of constituencies across Iceland when the Northeastern constituency was merged with the Eastern constituency (excluding Sveitarfélagið Hornafjörður municipality which was merged into the South constituency) and Siglufjörður municipality from the Northwestern constituency. Northeast consists of the regions of Eastern and Northeastern. The constituency currently elects nine of the 63 members of the Althing using the open party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2024 parliamentary election it had 31,071 registered electors. Regions Of Iceland
The regions of Iceland are eight areas of Iceland that roughly follow the arrangement of parliamentary constituencies as they were between 1959 and 2003. These regions are not incorporated polities but rather recognized groupings of municipalities. Iceland only has two levels of administration, the national government and 62 municipalities. The municipalities have organized themselves into eight regional associations and those boundaries are also recognized by Statistics Iceland to report statistics. Since 2014, police and commissioner ('' sýslumaður'') districts have followed the eight region model with the exception that Vestmannaeyjar forms a special district and not part of the Southern Region.
