''How to Kill a Bull'' () is a 1984 Finnish young adult novel by Anna-Leena Härkönen. It is Härkönen's debut novel, which she wrote at the age of 17. It is largely inspired by the 1951 novel ''The Catcher in the Rye'' by J. D. Salinger. The novel won the J. H. Erkko Award as the best debut literature work of 1984. It went on to become one of the most popular books of the 1980s and one of the highest-selling debut novels in the history of Finnish literature. However, the work also caused a controversy due to its bold, sexual content. Plot The main character of the novel is Alpo "Allu" Korva from Vaasa, who is a 16-year-old boy who has just finished comprehensive school. He is planning a summer vacation with his friend Taala. Anna-Leena Härkönen
Anna-Leena Härkönen (born 10 April 1965) is a Finnish writer and actress. She was born in Liminka and studied acting at the college of drama and the University of Tampere's program of drama studies, which she concluded in 1989. She won the J. H. Erkko Award in 1984 for her debut novel '' How to Kill a Bull'' (). A few dramatic productions, including one movie, have been adapted from Härkönen's works. ''Häräntappoase'' was made into a six-part television series and stage productions in Turku and Kotka and summer 2010 in Pyynikin kesäteatteri in Tampere. Scriptwriter Tove Idström and director Claes Olsson made a full-length movie based on ''Akvaariorakkautta'' ("Aquarium Love") which was released internationally as an art-house movie.
