The Handel Festival (in German: Händel-Festspiele) in Halle an der Saale, Saxony-Anhalt, is an international music festival concentrating on the music of George Frideric Handel in the composer's birthplace. It was founded on May 25, 1922 and it grew into a center of Handel studies and performance in Europe. Especially Handel's operas have been staged regularly, some of them as first revivals. Halle An Der Saale
Halle (Saale), or simply Halle (), is the second largest city of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. It is the sixth-most populous city in the area of former East Germany after (East) Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz and Magdeburg as well as the 31st-largest city of Germany. With around 226,000 inhabitants, it is less populous than the state capital, Magdeburg. With Leipzig, the largest city of Saxony, Halle forms the polycentric Leipzig-Halle conurbation. Leipzig/Halle International Airport lies between the two cities, in Schkeuditz. The Leipzig-Halle conurbation is at the heart of the larger Central German Metropolitan Region. Opernhaus Halle
The Halle Opera House () is an opera house located in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Originally named the Halle Town Theatre (), the theatre building was constructed in 1886 by architect Heinrich Seeling. On 31 March, 1945, a bomb attack destroyed much of the original building. Restoration work began a few years later, and the theatre reopened in 1951 under the name Landestheater Halle. In January 1992, it was renamed to its current title. Almira
''Almira, Königin von Castilien'' ("Almira, Queen of Castile", HWV 1; full title: ''Der in Krohnen erlangte Glücks-Wechsel, oder: Almira, Königin von Castilien'') is Handel's first opera, composed when he was 19 years old. It was first performed in Hamburg in January 1705. Background Georg Friedrich Händel came to the city of Hamburg in the summer of 1703 and played as a violinist in the theatre at the ''Gänsemarkt'', the local market place. On later occasions, he also played the harpsichord in the orchestra. His first opera – announced as a ''Singspiel'' although it has no spoken dialogue – was premiered on 8 January 1705, after being composed in the months directly preceding this. An Italian libretto was written by Giulio Pancheri in Venice in 1691 for Giuseppe Benevento's opera ''L'Almira''. The German translation used by Handel was made by Friedrich Christian Feustking.
