Hálendið (novel)
' (literally "The Highlands") is a 2011 novel by Steinar Bragi published by Mál og menning. It enjoyed very positive reviews. Synopsis Characters The novel is implicitly set around the time of the 2008–11 Icelandic financial crisis. It has four main characters, whose back-stories and psychological peculiarities the novel gradually develops through narratorial exposition and the characters' own flashbacks and conversations: * Hrafn, born into an elite Icelandic family, who after a troubled youth has become a leading entrepreneur in Iceland's financial boom. * Vigdís, Hrafn's girlfriend, who, notwithstanding the death of her mother in a car accident and a distant father, has done well in her education and become a psychiatrist. * Egill, a childhood friend of Hrafn's who despite heavy drinking and womanising has by dint of hard work become a lawyer and also a leading player in Iceland's financial boom. * Anna, Egill's girlfriend, noted in the novel for her sexual drive, who is ... Steinar Bragi
Steinar Bragi (full name: Steinar Bragi Guðmundsson) is an Icelandic writer born 15 August 1975. He has been called 'Iceland's foremost contemporary author, in the estimation of many'. Career At the age of 23 he published his first book of poetry, ''Svarthol'', and his first novel, ''Turninn'' ('the tower'), was published in 2000. He studied comparative literature and philosophy at the University of Iceland. In 2008, his book '' Konur'' ('Women') received great critical and commercial success and was nominated for the Nordic Council literature prize. Current affairs, particularly the 2008–11 Icelandic financial crisis, are prominent in his work from 2008 onwards, such as '' Konur'' and '' Hálendið: Skáldsaga''. Steinar Bragi is sometimes considered to be in the "new wave" of younger Icelandic authors influenced by popular culture and in his case the grotesque, with influences from horror writers such as H. Mál Og Menning
Mál og menning (, ) is an Icelandic publishing house, established in 1937. The press has published the work of many of Iceland's best known authors, among them Þórbergur Þórðarson, Jóhannes úr Kötlum, Svava Jakobsdóttir, Þórarinn Eldjárn, and Einar Kárason. As of 2007 its books are published by the publishing house Forlagið, of which Mál og menning is a controlling shareholder. Origins The publishing company Mál og menning was established on 17 June 1937, combining the press Heimskringla, which Kristinn E. Andrésson had founded in 1934, Ragnar í Smára's company Smári og fleirum, and the Félag byltingarsinnaðra rithöfunda (the Society of Revolutionary Authors, which included amongst others Kristinn E. Andrésson himself, Halldór Laxness, Steinn Steinarr, Jóhannes úr Kötlum and Halldór Stefánsson).
