Hutchinson Island, Georgia
Hutchinson Island is a river island in the Savannah River, north of downtown Savannah in Chatham County, Georgia, United States. The island is formed where the Back River breaks off to the north from the Savannah River. Historically, Hutchinson Island's land use has been primarily industrial, much of which supported the Port of Savannah, one of the busiest containerization cargo ports in the world. The island is roughly long and wide at its widest point. History The island was named after Archibald Hutchinson, an acquaintance of General Oglethorpe. It played a major role in the capture of Savannah during the American Civil War. After capturing Atlanta, Union Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman turned his army east and south, toward the Atlantic Ocean, and arrived in Savannah in December 1864. Indy NXT (pronounced "Indy Next"), previously Indy Lights, is an American developmental automobile racing series sanctioned by IndyCar, currently known as INDY NXT by Firestone for sponsorship reasons. Indy NXT is the highest step on the Road to Indy, a program of racing series leading up to the IndyCar Series. A similar series named Indy Lights filled the developmental role for the CART series, and ran from 1986 to 1993 as the American Racing Series and Dayton Indy Lights from 1991 to 2001. Vanderbilt Cup
The Vanderbilt Cup was the first major trophy in American auto racing. History An international event, it was founded by William Kissam Vanderbilt II in 1904 and first held on October 8 on a course set out in Nassau County, New York, Nassau County on Long Island, New York. The announcement that the race was to be held caused considerable controversy in New York, bringing a flood of legal actions in an attempt to stop the race. The politicians soon jumped in, holding public hearings on the issue. Vanderbilt prevailed and the inaugural race was run over a course of winding dirt roads through the Nassau County area. Vanderbilt put up a large cash prize hoping to encourage American manufacturers to get into racing, a sport already well organized in Europe that was yielding many factory improvements to motor vehicle technology. The 1911 American Grand Prize was held on November 30, 1911, and was the final race of the 1911 Grand Prix season. It was held on the Savannah, Georgia, road course three days after the Vanderbilt Cup was held on the same track. It was sanctioned by the Automobile Club of America. The 1910 American Grand Prize was a Grand Prix motor racing, Grand Prix auto race held on closed public roads outside Savannah, Georgia on November 12, 1910. It was the 1908 American Grand Prize, second edition of the Automobile Club of America's American Grand Prize. The race was won by American David Bruce-Brown in a Benz Söhne, Benz.
