Humsafar Trust
Humsafar Trust ( meaning 'companion' in Hindustani: , ) is an NGO in Mumbai that promotes LGBT rights. Founded by Ashok Row Kavi, Suhail Abbasi, and Sridhar Rangayan in 1994, it is one of the largest and most active of such organisations in India. It provides counselling, advocacy and healthcare to LGBT communities and has helped reduce violence, discrimination and stigma against them. Humsafar Trust is the convenor member of Integrated Network for Sexual Minorities (INFOSEM). Origin The Humsafar Trust (HST) was founded in April 1994 by journalist Ashok Row Kavi, media professional Suhail Abbasi and filmmaker Sridhar Rangayan, to reach out to LGBTQ communities in Mumbai Metro and surrounding areas. Ashok Row Kavi
Ashok Row Kavi is an Indian journalist and LGBT rights activist. Life He was born in Mumbai on 1 June 1947. He graduated with honours in Chemistry from the University of Bombay. Later, he dropped out of engineering college. Due to his early difficulty in dealing with his homosexuality, he enrolled as a Hindu monk in the Ramakrishna Mission and studied theology. Encouraged by a senior monk, he left the monastery to freely explore and express his homosexuality. He has also studied at the International Institute for Journalism. Career In a journalism career spanning 18 years, he worked in various newspapers and magazines, including India's largest circulated newspaper ''Malayala Manorama'' (as Western India Bureau-Chief), ''Sunday Mail'' and ''The Daily''. ''68 Pages'' is a 2007 Indian film about an HIV/AIDS counselor and five of her clients who are from marginalized communities. The film is directed by Sridhar Rangayan and produced by Humsafar Trust in association with Solaris Pictures. It had its world premiere at the International Film Festival of Kerala and screened at several international film festivals. It won the Silver Remi award at WorldFest Houston International Film Festival 2008, USA., Page 10, Line 5 The film was also screened in the Pink Ribbon Express, a National AIDS Control Organisation initiative. LGBT Rights In India
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) rights in India have expanded in the 21st century, although much of India's advancements on LGBT rights have come from the judiciary and not the legislature. LGBTQ people in India face legal and social challenges not experienced by non-LGBTQ people. There are no legal restrictions on sex between men or between women. Same-sex couples have some limited cohabitation rights, colloquially known as live-in relationships. However, India does not currently provide for common-law marriage, same-sex marriage, civil union or unregistered cohabitation. The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 recognises the right to self-perceived gender identity, and new identification documents confirming the change of gender can be issued by government agencies once a certificate is provided by a relevant medical official. A flash mob (or flashmob) is a group of people that assembles suddenly in a public place, performs for a brief time, then quickly disperses, often for the purposes of entertainment, satire, and/or artistic expression. Flash mobs may be organized via telecommunications, social media, or viral emails. Tinder is an online dating and geosocial networking application launched in 2012. After building a profile with a Meta login or cell phone number, users can swipe yes (right) or no (left) on potential romantic matches. On Tinder, users " swipe right" to like or "swipe left" to dislike other users' profiles, which include their photos, a short bio, and some of their interests. Tinder uses a "double opt-in" system, also called "matching", where two users must like each other before they can exchange messages. Chatting on Tinder is only available between two users who have swiped right on one another's profiles. The selections a user makes are not known to other users unless two users swipe right on each other's profiles. International HIV/AIDS Alliance
Frontline AIDS (formerly known as the International HIV/AIDS Alliance (IHAA) until 2019) is a global partnership of nationally based governmental and non-governmental organizations which support community organizations which promote HIV/AIDS issues in developing countries. The Alliance was created in November 1993 as the International Alliance Supporting Community Action on AIDS, and later renamed the International HIV/AIDS Alliance. In 2019, they rebranded themselves as Frontline AIDS. The alliance's founding executive director, Jeffrey O'Malley, served from 1993 to 2003. From 2003 until 2015, the alliance was led by Alvaro Bermejo, who was succeeded by Christine Stegling. The KASHISH Pride Film Festival (earlier known as KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, also known as Mumbai International Queer Film Festival and Mumbai Queer Film Festival) is an annual LGBTQ event that has been held in Mumbai, India, since 2010. Sridhar Rangayan
Sridhar Rangayan (also spelt Sridhar Rangaihn; born 2 April 1962) is an Indian filmmaker who has made films with special focus on queer subjects. His queer films, '' The Pink Mirror'', '' Yours Emotionally'', '' 68 Pages'', '' Purple Skies'', '' Breaking Free'' & '' Evening Shadows'' have been considered groundbreaking because of their realistic and sympathetic portrayal of the largely closeted Indian gay community. His film'' The Pink Mirror'' remains banned in India by the Indian Censor Board because of its homosexual content. Rangayan was born in Mandya, Karnataka.
