Hugo Åbergs Memorial
Hugo Åbergs Memorial is an annual Group One harness event for trotters that is held at Jägersro Racetrack in Malmö, Sweden. Hugo Åbergs Memorial has taken place since 1970. In 2008, the purse of the event was approximately US$291,000 (SEK1,750,000). Hugo Åbergs Memorial is part of the European Grand Circuit. Origin Hugo Åbergs Memorial was inaugurated in 1970 to commemorate Hugo Åberg, who had died in a car accident the previous year. Åberg was a significant building contractor, responsible for many building projects in Malmö, as well as a horse racing devotee. Racing conditions Since the start in 1970, Hugo Åbergs Memorial has been almost exclusively over 1,609 meters, one mile. The two exceptions are the editions of 1971 and 1972, when the race was nine meters shorter, i.e. 1,600 meters. Auto start has been used all years but 1971 and 1977, when volt start was used instead. Sören Nordin
Ernst Sören Nordin (5 September 1917, in Forsa, Hälsingland – 6 September 2008) was a Swedish harness racing driver and trainer who later started a stable in America. Nordin won 3,221 races in 10 different countries as a driver, he won the Swedish Trotting Derby 11 times – still a record. In 1950, Nordin won the ''Prix d'Amérique'', and in 1953 the '' Elitloppet''. 21 times, Nordin was the champion driver at Solvalla racetrack in Stockholm, Sweden's premier track. In 1981, he moved to the United States to set up the Team Nordin stable together with his son, Jan, training their trotters during the winter at Pompano Park's training center. Mack Lobell
Mack Lobell (1984–2016) was a brown racing trotter by Mystic Park out of Matina Hanover by Speedy Count. He won $3,917,594 during his career and was elected Harness Horse of the Year in 1987 and 1988. Among his many stakes victories were the Yonkers Trot, the Hambletonian, the Elitloppet (twice), the Breeders Crown events for three-year-old and for four-year-old trotters, and the International Trot. His best time of 1:52.1 for the mile was taken as a three-year-old in a race in Springfield, Illinois; this time set the world record for trotters. Varenne (foaled in Copparo, Italy, 19 May 1995) is a dark bay racing trotter by Waikiki Beach out of Ialmaz by Zebu. Varenne is considered to be the best trotter of all time. Victory Tilly (5 March 1995 – 7 April 2024) was a Swedish racing Standardbred horse, trotter by Quick Pay out of Icora Tilly by Fakir du Vivier.
