Hoành Sơn Range
Hoành Sơn Range is a mountain range in the North Central Coast region of Vietnam. The range runs from Annamite Range to the South China Sea in southern Hà Tĩnh Province and northern Quảng Bình Province. It's the natural borderline of these two provinces. The length of this range is about 50 km. It crosses National Route 1 in Ngang Pass. History The Hoành Sơn mountains once served as a natural barrier between Dai Viet and Champa from 938 to 1069 when it was annexed by Vietnamese Lý dynasty and the site of the 30 km-long Kỳ Anh barrier built by Champa. North Central Coast
Bắc Trung Bộ (literally North Central Region, and often translated as North Central Coast) is one of the geographic regions of Vietnam. It consists of six provinces in northern part of Central Vietnam: Thanh Hóa, Nghệ An, Hà Tĩnh, Quảng Bình, Quảng Trị, Huế. The last two provinces were the northernmost provinces of State of Vietnam and South Vietnam until Reunification of Vietnam in 1976. In the Nguyễn dynasty, this area (except Thừa Thiên) was known as Hữu Trực Kỳ (the area located in the left of Thừa Thiên). Annamite Range
The Annamite Range (; ) is a major mountain range of Mainland Southeast Asia, extending approximately through Laos, Vietnam, and a small area in northeast Cambodia. Geography The highest points of the Annamite Range are the -high Phou Bia, the -high Phu Xai Lai Leng and the -high Ngọc Linh (Ngoc Pan). The latter is located at the northwestern edge of the Triassic Kontum Massif in central Vietnam. Important mountain passes are the Nape Pass and the Mụ Giạ Pass. The Annamite Range runs parallel to the Vietnamese coast, in a gentle curve which divides the basin of the Mekong River from Vietnam's narrow coastal plain along the South China Sea. The South China Sea is a marginal sea of the Western Pacific Ocean. Quảng Bình was formerly a southern coastal Provinces of Vietnam, province in the North Central Coast region, the Central Vietnam, Central of Việt Nam, Vietnam. Ngang Pass
The Ngang Pass (, , literally "Transverse Mountain Pass") is a mountain pass on the border of the provinces of Quảng Bình and Hà Tĩnh, in the North Central Coast of Vietnam. National Route 1 crosses it as it traverses the Hoành Sơn, a side-spur of the larger Annamite Range. The pass is 2,560 m long, ascending to the height of 250 m (750 ft). Historical French texts refer to the pass as ''Porte d'Annam''. History It marked the former boundary of Champa and Dai Viet until 1069, when Vietnamese Lý dynasty annexed Quảng Bình into her territory. A natural barrier is a physical feature that protects or hinders travel through or over. Mountains, swamps, deserts and ice fields are among the clearest examples of natural barriers.
