Howell Mountain, California
Howell Mountain (formerly, White Cottage) is an unincorporated community in the Vaca Mountains, within Napa County, California. It lies at an elevation of 1683 feet (513 m). History Howell Mountain was originally territory of the Wappo people. It was settled by European-Americans beginning in the 1840s. Wine grapes were first planted on the mountain in the 1870s by William Campbell Watson, grandson-in-law of settler George Yount. Numerous wineries and health spas were built in the area in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In August 2020, Howell Mountain was evacuated due to the Hennessey Fire, which resulted in the burning of over in five counties, including near Howell Mountain. Wappo
The Wappo (endonym: ''Micewal'') are an Indigenous people of northern California. Their traditional homelands are in Napa Valley, the south shore of Clear Lake, Alexander Valley, and Russian River valley. They are distantly related to the Yuki people, from which they seem to have diverged at least 500 years ago. Their language, Wappo, has been influenced by the neighboring Pomo, who use the term ''A'shochamai'' or ''A'shotenchawi'' (transcribed as ''Ashochimi'' by some authors), meaning "northerners", to refer to the Wappo. George Yount
George Calvert Yount (May 4, 1794 – October 5, 1865), later known by his Spanish name Don Jorge Concepción Yount, was a Californian ranchero, fur trapper, and entrepreneur. Born in North Carolina, he later emigrated to Alta California, where he became a Mexican citizen and acquired substantial property holdings in the Napa Valley, largely due to the influence of his friendship with General Mariano G. Vallejo. The city of Yountville, California is named for him. Biography George C. Yount was born in Burke County, North Carolina, but grew up in Missouri. He fought in the War of 1812 and the Indian wars. Yount was a farmer but in 1826, after business difficulties, left his wife and three children in Missouri, and went to Santa Fe and became a fur trapper. Angwin is a census-designated place (CDP) in Napa County, California, best known as the site of Pacific Union College. It is part of the northern San Francisco Bay Area.
