Howe Barn
The Howe Barn is a historic barn, that has been converted into a house, in Ipswich, Massachusetts, United States. It is important as one of a small number of surviving First Period barn frames in Essex County. Family tradition places the construction of the barn to c. 1711 by Abraham Howe, an early settler of the Linebrook Road area. Elements of the frame, which are still visible in the attic and some areas left exposed during the 1948 conversion to a house, bear some resemblance to a similar period barn at the Stanley Lake House in nearby Topsfield. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Ipswich is a coastal town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 13,785 at the 2020 census. Home to Willowdale State Forest and Sandy Point State Reservation, Ipswich includes the southern part of Plum Island. A residential community with a vibrant tourism industry, the town is famous for its clams, celebrated annually at the Ipswich Chowderfest, and for Crane Beach, a barrier beach near the Crane estate. First Period is an American architecture style in the time period between approximately 1626 and 1725, used by British colonists during the earliest English settlements in United States, particularly in Massachusetts and Virginia and later in other British colonies along the east coast. Among these cities, Essex County in Massachusetts has the highest amount of preserved First Period architecture mimicking British architecture styles. Stanley Lake House
The Stanley Lake House is a historic First Period house in Topsfield, Massachusetts. It is a -story wood-frame house that was built in stages by Mathew Stanley or his heirs between c. 1675 and 1693 and subsequently enlarged by the Lake family. It illustrates a host of building practices over the 17th and 18th centuries. The first Matthew Stanley house was said by Dow to be located northwest of this building. The first portion of this building is the section from the chimney westward. An easterly room was added after and a further addition to the east by the Lakes . Matthew Stanley's heirs having removed to the Attleborough Falls area, sold the 70 acre farm property 1710- 1718 to Eleazer Lake. The property also includes a rare First Period barn. Topsfield, Massachusetts
Topsfield is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 6,569 at the 2020 census. Topsfield is located in the North Shore region of Massachusetts. Part of the town comprises the census-designated place of Topsfield. History Colonial period The Agawam tribe inhabited Topsfield prior to and during the British colonization in the early seventeenth century. They were one of the Algonquian peoples. They claimed the land north of the Danvers River, the whole of Cape Ann and from there to the Merrimack River. However, the first European explorers had brought smallpox to New England, decimating all the shore tribes from the Penobscot River to Narragansett Bay in 1616. Chief Masconomet, for whom Masconomet Regional High School is named, was the sagamore or chief of the Agawam at this time.
