Howard County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. At the 2020 census, its population was 34,860. Its county seat is Big Spring. The county was created in 1876 and organized in 1882. It is named for Volney E. Howard, a U.S. Congressman from Texas. Howard County is included in the Big Spring, Texas micropolitan statistical area. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which are land and (0.4%) are covered by water. Howard County is located at the boundary between the Llano Estacado to the north and the Edwards Plateau to the south. Beals Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River, flows through the center of Big Spring and divides these two major physiographic regions. Interstate 20 in Texas (I-20) is a major east–west Interstate Highway in the Southern United States, running east from a junction with I-10 east of Kent, Texas, through the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex to the Louisiana state line near Waskom, Texas. The original distance of I-20 was from I-10 to the Louisiana state line, reduced to the current distance of with the rerouting of I-20 in the 1980s and 1990s. State Highway 176 (SH 176) is a Texas state highway running from the New Mexico state line east to Big Spring. It is most commonly known as the Andrews Highway. History SH 176 was originally designated on September 22, 1932, as a connector route between Tyler and the Gregg–Rusk county line. On May 23, 1933, SH 176 was extended to Kilgore. On September 26, 1939, this route had been reassigned to SH 31 when its path was shifted south.
