Houghton Lake Heights is an unincorporated community located in Roscommon County in the U.S. state of Michigan. Located on the western shores of Houghton Lake within Roscommon Township, the community is contained within the larger census-designated community of Houghton Lake. As an unincorporated community, Houghton Lake Heights has no defined boundaries or population statistics of its own, but it does have its own post office with the 48630 ZIP Code. History Founding The community began about 1883 as a lumbering settlement with the operations of the S. C. Hall Lumber Company. Because of its elevation, it was called "The Heights" and a post office with that name opened on November 24, 1923. The post office was renamed "Houghton Lake Heights" in 1956. Houghton Lake Airport , known formally as Houghton Lake State Airport, is a state-owned public airport located in Roscommon County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is in the community of Houghton Lake Heights within Roscommon Township. The airport is named after the nearby Houghton Lake just east of the airport, and it is also included within the census-designated place of Houghton Lake. The airport was first constructed in 1932 and publicly activated in April 1940. The facility is located near the intersection of M-55 (West Houghton Lake Drive) and Old U.S. Highway 27 about east of U.S. Highway 127. It is a publicly owned airport supported through tax dollars, and the airport is maintained by the Michigan Department of Transportation. Houghton Lake is a lake in Roscommon County, Michigan. The unincorporated community of Prudenville is at the southeastern end of the lake, while the unincorporated communities of Houghton Lake and Houghton Lake Heights are on the southwest and west shores. It is the largest inland lake in the state of Michigan, and one of the largest natural inland lakes in the United States (many man-made impoundments are much larger). Houghton Lake is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Roscommon County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The CDP is located within Denton, Lake, and Roscommon townships. The population was 5,294 at the time of the 2020 census. The CDP is situated on the southwest shore of Houghton Lake, which at 22,000 acres is Michigan's largest inland lake, and also includes the unincorporated community of Houghton Lake Heights.
