Hotevilla-Bacavi, Arizona
Hotevilla-Bacavi (Hopi: Hotvela-Paaqavi; also known as Third Mesa) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Navajo County, Arizona, United States, on the Hopi Reservation. The population was 957 at the 2010 census. History Hotevilla was first settled by the "hostiles", a group of Hopi residents who were forced out of nearby Oraibi in the 1906 Oraibi Split due to ideological differences over European cultural influences by recently arrived settlers, soldiers and missionaries, influences against which the hostiles were opposed. The US Army seized the children of Hotevilla on Dec 2, 1911 and sent them to government boarding schools after years of protracted resistance. Later attempts to reintegrate displaced residents resulted in another split to the settlement of Bacavi, which later joined with Hotevilla to create a unified settlement. Hotevilla is mentioned by D. Oraibi, Arizona
Oraibi, also referred to as Old Oraibi, is a Hopi village in Navajo County, Arizona, Navajo County, Arizona, United States, in the northeastern part of the state. Known as Orayvi by the native inhabitants, it is on Third Mesa on the Hopi Reservation near Kykotsmovi Village, Arizona, Kykotsmovi Village. History Oraibi was founded sometime before the year 1100 AD, making it possibly the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the United States. Archeologists speculate that a series of severe droughts in the late 13th century forced the Hopi to abandon several smaller villages in the region and consolidate within a few population centers, Oraibi being one of them. Helen Sekaquaptewa
Helen Sekaquaptewa (1898-1990), was a Hopi Mormon homemaker, matriarch and storyteller, best known for her as-told-to memoir, ''Me and Mine: The Life Story of Helen Sekaquaptewa'', which was compiled by her friend Louise Udall based on Sekaquaptewa's recollections. Life Helen Sekaquaptewa was born in the Hopi village of Oraibi into a Hopi faction, the "Hostiles", who fought against colonial assimilation. After the faction was ousted from Oraibi, she was forced to attend a Native American boarding school. When she returned after high-school, Sekaquaptewa rejected her family's traditionalist Hopi values and married her husband, Emory, in order to live biculturally. They married in 1919, with both a traditional Hopi and a Christian marriage ceremony. Settling down in Hotevilla, Emory became a tribal judge while Helen involved herself in social welfare work and community building. Charles Loloma
Charles Sequevya Loloma (January 7, 1921 — June 9, 1991) was a Hopi Native American artist known for his jewelry. He also worked in pottery, painting and ceramics. A highly influential Native American jeweler during the 20th century, Loloma popularized use of gold and gemstones not previously used in Hopi jewelry. Early life and education He was born near Hotevilla, Hopi Third Mesa, to Rex Loloma and Rachel Kuyiyesva Loloma, to the Badger clan (his mother's clan). He attended Phoenix Indian High School in Arizona where he began his artistic career as a muralist and painter when he was asked by Fred Kabotie to assist in the reproduction of murals from the Awatovi site on the Hopi reservation for New York's Museum of Modern Art. Loloma later worked with Kabotie and René d'Harnoncourt on murals in the Federal Building on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay for the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939.
