Horodok, Haisyn Raion
Horodok (Ukrainian: Городок) (Russian: Городо́к) (Polish: Gródek) is a village in Dashivka settlement hromada, Haisyn Raion, Vinnytsia Oblast, in Ukraine. It lies on both banks of the Soroka River uk">:uk:Сорока (притока Собу)">uk/sup> (a tributary of the Sobu uk">:uk:Соб">uk/sup>), and is located 32 km southeast of the city of Illintsi. The population was 1,076 as of January 1, 2018. The town is the head of the Horodotsk Village Council. History Initially, the settlement was called Grudek (Ukrainian: Грудек), and was founded between 1612 and 1625, then being part of the Granov volost uk">:uk:Гранівська волость">uk/sup>. It was founded by a nobleman from the Sieniawski family of the Leliwa coat of arms, who, at the time, was the owner of the land that comprised the Granivska volost. Yarmolyntsi Raion ( uk, Ярмолинецький район, ) was one of the 20 administrative raions (a ''district'') of Khmelnytskyi Oblast in western Ukraine. Its administrative center was located in the urban-type settlement of Yarmolyntsi. Its population was 39,201 as of the 2001 Ukrainian Census. The raion was abolished on 18 July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Khmelnytskyi Oblast to three. A ghetto, often called ''the'' ghetto, is a part of a city in which members of a minority group live, especially as a result of political, social, legal, environmental or economic pressure. Ghettos are often known for being more impoverished than other areas of the city. Versions of the ghetto appear across the world, each with their own names, classifications, and groupings of people. The first general census of the population of the Russian Empire in 1897 ( pre-reform Russian: ) was the first and only nation-wide census performed in the Russian Empire (the Grand Duchy of Finland was excluded). Pogroms in the Russian Empire (russian: Еврейские погромы в Российской империи) were large-scale, targeted, and repeated anti-Jewish rioting that began in the 19th century. Pogroms began to occur after Imperial Russia, which previously had very few Jews, acquired territories with large Jewish populations from the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Ottoman Empire from 1772 to 1815. These territories were designated "the Pale of Settlement" by the Imperial Russian government, within which Jews were reluctantly permitted to live, and it was within them where the pogroms largely took place.
