Horley Methodist School, Teluk Intan
Horley Methodist School (; abbreviated HMS) is a school in Teluk Intan, Perak, Malaysia. Established in 1898 as the Government Tamil School, the school was transferred to the Methodist Episcopal Mission in the following year and was later renamed the Anglo-Chinese School. The school was again renamed Horley Methodist School in 1962. History Established originally as a Government school which passed into the control of the Methodist Mission in 1899, due to the efforts of the Reverend W E Horley who was based in Ipoh and had founded the Anglo-Chinese School, Ipoh in 1895. The Teluk Anson school was an attap thatched building on stilts, enclosed with weather boarding of split bamboo. In 1904, Rev. Horley held a meeting of the leading residents of Teluk Anson in the Lower Perak Chinese Club and collected funds to put up a bigger and better school. Teluk Intan
Teluk Intan is a town in Hilir Perak District, Perak, Malaysia. It is the district capital, the largest town in the district and fourth largest town in the state of Perak with an estimated population of around 172,505, more than half of Hilir Perak district's total population (232,900). In the early days, the town was known as Teluk Mak Intan, after a female Mandailing trader. It was here that the Perak rulers held court from 1528 until Kuala Kangsar became the royal town in 1877. During the British protectorate era, the name was changed to Teluk Anson (Anson Bay), in honour of a British officer and last Lieutenant-Governor, lieutenant-governor of Penang, Major-General Sir Edward Anson, Archibald Edward Harbord Anson, who drew the plan of the modern township in 1882. In 1982 during the centenary of the town's establishment, the name was changed again to Teluk Intan (Diamond Bay) by the Sultan of Perak. William Edward Horley
William Edward Horley MBE (5 June 1870 – 2 April 1931) was a Methodist missionary and educationalist in Malaya. In addition to his missionary work for the Methodist Episcopal Church, many schools, both religious and secular, were opened in Malaya largely through his efforts. Early life Rev. William Edward Horley was born on 5 June 1870 in Bloxham, and was educated at Bloxham School, and Harley College, a missionary training school in Bromley-by-Bow. Career In 1895, Horley was sent to the Anglo-Chinese School, Singapore, founded by Bishop William Fitzjames Oldham as a missionary teacher, and in the following year was ordained in the Wesleyan Ministry. In 1896, he was sent to Ipoh to start a school, and within a month opened a school in a Malay house. Soon after, the government gave him four acres of land on which he built a church which he also used for the school which then had around 50 pupils.
