Honoré De Marseille
''Honoré de Marseille'' is a 1956 French comedy musical film by Maurice Régamey and starring Fernandel. Plot The story begins in 600 BC with the landing in a calque of a Phocéenne galley commanded by the warrior Honorius who, married by mistake the daughter of the Ligurian king, will found the city of Marseille. Honor, the first Marseilles, gives way to Honorius to tell us the hero-comic adventures of the siege of Marseille by the legions of Julius Caesar, which will lead to the invention of the petanque. Through successive leaps over the centuries, and in songs, Honoré tells us the history of the city of Phocea. Georges Guétary (), born Lambros Vorloou ( ; 8 February 1915 – 13 September 1997) was a French singer, dancer, cabaret performer and film actor, best known for his role in the 1951 musical ''An American in Paris''. Early life and career Guétary was born in Alexandria, Egypt, to Greek parents. His father was a textile executive. He studied music in Egypt and in Paris, and made his stage debut in 1937. He performed as a singer and dancer with the famed chanteuse Mistinguett at the Casino de Paris. The British newspaper ''The Independent'' said at the time of his death that "part of Guétary's exotic charm, and much of his stage persona as a 'Latin lover' with a voice of creme Chantilly resided in his mischievous innocence combined with an erotic mystery inherent in his ancestry." Constantin "Tino" Rossi (29 April 1907 – 26 September 1983) was a French singer and film actor of Corsican origin. Born in Ajaccio, Corsica, Rossi was gifted with a voice well suited for opera. He became a tenor in the French cabaret style. Later, he appeared in various movies. During his career it is reported he recorded over 2000 songs and he appeared in more than 25 films, the most notable of which was the 1954 production, '' Si Versailles m'était conté...'' directed by Sacha Guitry. His romantic ballads had especially women swooning and his art songs by Jules Massenet (1842–1912), Reynaldo Hahn (1875–1947), and other composers, sold out theaters wherever he performed. "C'est Noël" is a French popular song composed in 1956 by Henri Betti with the lyrics by Jean Manse. Story In 1956, Henri Betti composed the music for the film ''Honoré de Marseille'' in which he also composed the music of four songs with lyrics by Jean Manse, all of which are performed by Fernandel. ''C'est Noël'' was one of the four songs that Fernandel sings in the film, but the scene was cut in the editing. So it appears only in the record released the same year with the other three songs of the film (''Tout ça c'est Marseille'', ''Quel plaisir ! Quel travail !'' and ''Oh ! Honoré'') all orchestrated by Paul Bonneau. The melody of this song was written by Henri Betti when he became father of a girl in 1950. The scene where Fernandel sang this song was in a Christmas night decor where Claire Diamant, who played the role of his niece Josette, was sitting on her lap. Paul Bonneau (14 September 1918 – 8 July 1995) was a French conductor, composer and arranger, whose career was mainly in the field of light music and films. Career Born in Moret-sur-Loing in 1918, Paul Bonneau studied music at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris in the same class as Maurice Baquet, Henri Betti, Henri Dutilleux and Louiguy. He won the ''premier prix d'harmonie'' (1937) in the class of Jean Gallon, the ''premier prix de fugue'' (1942) in the class of Noël Gallon and the ''premier prix de composition'' (1945) in the class of Henri Büsser. In 1939, he was Army deputy chief of music and in 1945 was made director of music for the Republican Guard. He then became conductor of light orchestral music on national radio, a position he held for thirty years. His first radio broadcast was on 27 November 1944.
