The Hobart Islanders (also known as the Tassie Islanders) were an Australian professional basketball team based in Hobart, Tasmania. The Islanders competed in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) and played their home games at Kingborough Sports Centre. The Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) is a professional women's basketball list of basketball leagues, league in Australia composed of eight teams. The league was founded in 1981 and is the Women's sports, women's counterpart to the National Basketball League (Australia), National Basketball League (NBL). History Founding of the WNBL In August 1980, West Adelaide Bearcat Coach Ted Owens (basketball), Ted Powell, after an encouraging exchange of letters with St Kilda'Coach Bill Palmer called a meeting at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel in Adelaide. Robyn Maher
Robyn Maher (born 6 October 1959) is an Australian former basketball player. A three-time Olympian, she was a member of the national women's team that won the bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. In the Women's National Basketball League, she played for the Nunawading Spectres, Hobart Islanders, Perth Breakers and Sydney Uni Flames. Maher was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2002 Australia Day Honours in recognition of her "service to basketball as a player and administrator, and for the promotion of the sport among young people". In 2006, Maher was inducted into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame. In October 2018, she was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. North Adelaide Rockets is a NBL1 Central club based in Adelaide, South Australia. The club fields both a men's and women's team. The Kingborough Sports Centre (KSC) is a multi-purpose sports venue located in Hobart, Tasmania, in the suburb of Kingston. The centre caters for indoor sports such as volleyball, basketball and netball. Work began in 1978 on a four-level complex that was finished in 1979 at a cost of $1.3 million.
