Hmars
Hmar people are a scheduled tribe ethnic group from the states of Manipur, Mizoram, Assam, and Meghalaya in Northeast India. They use the Hmar language as their primary language. In 2023, the Hmar Inpui, an apex body of the tribe 'reaffirmed' the identity of the Hmar people as Mizo. Population According to the 2011 Indian Census, there were 98,988 Hmar speakers (as first language). The Hmar population itself (including, Hmar people who speak Mizo language as their first language) roughly stands at 200,000–300,000. Several critics and scholars point out that a significant population of the Hmar people are fully 'Mizonised' in Mizoram, hence do not reflect as "Hmar tribe" population, rather as "Any Mizo tribes" in Census reports. Hmar Language
The Hmar language (Hmar: ''Khawsak Țawng'') is a Northern Mizo language spoken by the Hmar people of Northeast India. It belongs to the Kuki-Chin branch of this language family. Speakers of Hmar often use Mizo(Duhlian) as their second language (L2). The language has official status in some regions and is used in education to varying degrees. It possesses a rich oral tradition, including traditional sayings (''Ṭawngkasuok'') and festival songs like the ''Sikpui Hla''. Mizo People
The Mizo people, historically called the Lushais, are a Tibeto-Burman ethnic group primarily from Mizoram in northeastern India. They speak Mizo, one of the state's official languages and its lingua franca. Beyond Mizoram, sizable Mizo communities live in neighboring northeast Indian states like Manipur, Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura, with minority populations also found in Myanmar and the United States. Mizoram is the most literate state in India, and the first to reach 100%. Sinlung
Sinlung (origin: Hmar; ''Chhinlung'' in Mizo; ''Chinlung'' in Chin; ''Khul'' in Thadou and Paite) is the supposed 'ancestral origin' of the Hmar people (or the larger Mizo people), the Chin people, etc. The exact location is unknown, but it is believed to be somewhere in southern China. Several narratives of Sinlung have been 'enshrined' largely in Hmar folklore, such as the ''Sikpui Hla''. Etymology Several scholars agree that 'Sinlung' literally translates to 'sin' as 'lid' and 'lung' as 'stone' (in the Hmar language). Lalremsiami Hmarzote
Lalremsiami Hmarzote (born 30 March 2000) is an Indian field hockey player who plays as a forward and occasionally as a halfback for the Indian national team. At the club level, she plays for Sports Authority of India. Hmarzote was a part of the 18-member squad that represented India at the 2018 World Cup. At the Asian Games that followed, she became the first sportsperson from Mizoram to win an Asian medal after she won silver. Tibeto-Burman
The Tibeto-Burman languages are the non- Sinitic members of the Sino-Tibetan language family, over 400 of which are spoken throughout the Southeast Asian Massif ("Zomia") as well as parts of East Asia and South Asia. Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl (born 25 January 1946) is the current president of The Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance or TIPRA. He was the leader of the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra, a political party based in the Indian state of Tripura. Lalnghinglova Hmar (popularly known as Tetea Hmar, born on 9 October 1977) is the current Minister of State for Labour, Employment, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Department, Sport & Youth Services Department and Excise & Narcotics Department.
