Hiwassee River
The Hiwassee River is a river in the states of Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. It originates from a spring on the north slope of Rocky Mountain (Georgia), Rocky Mountain in Towns County, Georgia, Towns County in northern Georgia, then flows northward into North Carolina before turning westward into Tennessee; it joins the Tennessee River a few miles west of what is now State Route 58 (Tennessee), State Route 58 in Meigs County, Tennessee. Charleston, Tennessee
Charleston is a city in Bradley County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 664 at the 2020 census. It is included in the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The land now occupied by Charleston and Bradley County was home to the Cherokee long before European settlers arrived. John Muir Trail (Tennessee)
The John Muir National Recreation Trail (#152) is a 20.7 mile (33.3 km) trail in eastern Tennessee, along the north side of Hiwassee River in the Cherokee National Forest. Hiwassee Dam
Hiwassee Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Hiwassee River in Cherokee County, in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Mission Dam
Mission Dam is a dam on the Hiwassee River in Clay County, in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The dam is located between Hiwassee Dam and Chatuge Dam. The city of Andrews, North Carolina built the dam in 1924 at a cost of $500,000 to supply energy. The dam is the oldest on the river (other dams on along the Hiwassee were constructed in the 1940s). Nantahala Power and Light bought the facility in 1929 and upgraded it in 1943. Unlike other dams on the river, it is operated by Duke Energy instead of the Tennessee Valley Authority. In 2018 the dam was purchased by Northbrook Power Management Mission Dam was built as an Ambursen type dam, but in 1999 many of its chambers were filled in due to concrete deterioration. It is 50 feet (15 m) high and 397 feet (121 m) long. Mission Dam is classified by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a high-hazard dam, meaning a dam failure may pose a deadly threat to nearby residents. Chatuge Dam
Chatuge Dam is a flood control and hydroelectric dam on the Hiwassee River in Clay County, in the U.S. state of North Carolina.
