Australian rules football is a contact sport that originated in Melbourne, Australia about 1858. The first documented match was played between Melbourne Grammar School Football Club and Scotch College, and the earliest known rules were codified in 1859. The sport quickly grew in popularity, leading to the formation of early leagues such as the South Australian National Football League (originally called the South Australian Football Association), and the Victorian Football Association in 1877. By the early 20th century, it had become the dominant winter sport in several Australian states. William Josiah Sumner Hammersley (25 September 1826 – 15 November 1886) was an English-born first-class cricketer and sports journalist in Victoria, Australia, one of the four men credited with setting down the original rules of Australian rules football. Life Hammersley (1826-1886) was born on 25 September 1826 at Ash, Surrey, England to father William Josiah Hammersley of England. Hammersley was educated at Aldenham School and at a private school in Billericay. He matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge, but did not graduate with a degree.
