''Hip, Hip, Hurrah!'' (Danish: ''Hip, hip, hurra! Kunstnerfest på Skagen,'' ) is an oil-on-canvas painting from 1888 by Danish painter Peder Severin Krøyer. Description The work shows various members of the Skagen Painters: a group of Danish, Norwegian and Swedish artists who formed a loose community in Skagen at the northern tip of Jutland in the 1880s and early 1890s. ''Hip, Hip, Hurrah!'' is typical of the work produced by the Skagen Painters; very much in the style of the French Impressionists and Naturalism (arts), Naturalists, it celebrates the play of light in the scene (and in composition and subject draws obvious comparisons to Renoir's ''Luncheon of the Boating Party''), but at the same time it harks back to the ''freundschaftbild'' tradition of artists of the Danish Golden Age such as Ditlev Blunck and Wilhelm Bendz in depicting artistic communities spontaneously drawing together. Peder Severin Krøyer
Peder Severin Krøyer (; 23 July 1851 – 21 November 1909), also known as P. S. Krøyer, was a Danish painter. Life Growing up and early training Krøyer was born in Stavanger, Norway, on 23 July 1851 to a single mother, Ellen Cecilie Gjesdal. He was raised by Gjesdal's sister, Bertha Cecilie (born 1817) and brother-in-law, the Danish zoologist Henrik Nikolai Krøyer, after his mother was judged unfit to care for him. Krøyer moved to Copenhagen to live with his foster parents soon afterward. Having begun his art education at the age of nine under private tutelage, he was enrolled in Copenhagen's Technical Institute the following year. In 1870, at the age of 19, Krøyer completed his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Art ('), where he had studied with Frederik Vermehren. Degn Brøndum
Christen Degn Brøndum (21 March 1856 – 18 April 1932) was the proprietor of Brøndums Hotel in Skagen, Denmark, which was closely associated with the Skagen Painters. Biography Born in Skagen, Brøndum was the son of Erik Andersen Brøndum and Ane Hedvig Møller and the brother of Anna Ancher. Erik Andersen Brøndum, Anna's and Degn's father ran the Brøndums Hotel before Degn Brøndum took over the hotel around 1880. Anna Ancher became one of the Skagen painters. Degn Brøndum was one of the founders of Skagens Museum in 1908. An avid art lover, Brøndum provided accommodation for many of the artists who came to spend the summer months in Skagen. If the artists were short of money, they were able to cover the cost of their accommodation at Brøndum's hotel by donating paintings to Degn Brøndum. These paintings were hung in the dining-room. St Katharine Docks is a former dock in the St Katherine and Wapping ward of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Charlottenborg Palace () is a large town mansion located on the corner of Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn in Copenhagen, Denmark. Originally built as a residence for Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve, it has served as the base of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts since its foundation in 1754. Pontus Fürstenberg (4 October 1827 – 10 April 1902) was a Swedish art collector and merchant from a Jewish family. He was married to Göthilda Magnus. Background Pontus Fürstenberg was born at Östra Hamngatan 26, in Gothenburg, Sweden. His family had arrived in Sweden at the beginning of the 19th century. Pontus was the oldest child, and his parents were wholesalers Levy Fürstenberg and Rosa Warburg. Levy also owned the textile company Levy Fürstenberg & Co, which provided the family a good economic base. Pontus did poorly in school. Fritz Stoltenberg
Fritz Stoltenberg (7 April 1855 -13 November 1921) was a German landscape and marine art, marine painter. After a summer with the Skagen Painters in 1884, he returned to Kiel where he painted and sketched the old town and the harbor, publishing many of his illustrations in local magazines. Early life Born in 1855 as the son of a sea captain in the north German town of Kiel, by the age of 17 Stoltenberg had already demonstrated his artistic talents with sketches of his home town and its idyllic surroundings. Helga Cathrine Ancher (1883–1964) was a Danish painter. As the daughter of Anna and Michael Ancher, she was closely associated with the Skagen Painters. Most of her paintings were of her family and friends in Skagen and of local landscapes. Early life and education Born in Skagen on 19 August 1883, Helga Ancher was the daughter of Anna and Michael Ancher, both of whom are among the most prominent members of the artist colony in the far north of Jutland known as the Skagen Painters. After being introduced to art by her parents, she attended Charlotte Sode and Julie Meldahl's art school in Copenhagen. In 1901, she entered the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts where she studied under Valdemar Irminger and Viggo Johansen until 1904. Anna Ancher (18 August 1859 – 15 April 1935) was a Danish artist associated with the Skagen Painters, an artist colony on the northern point of Jylland, Denmark. She is considered to be one of Denmark's greatest visual artists. Background Anna Kirstine Brøndum was born in Skagen, Denmark, the daughter of Ane Hedvig Møller (1826–1916) and Erik Andersen Brøndum (1820–1890). She was the only one of the Skagen Painters who was born and grew up in Skagen, where her father owned the Brøndums Hotel.
