Hillingdon
Hillingdon is an area of Uxbridge within the London Borough of Hillingdon, centred 14.2 miles (22.8 km) west of Charing Cross. It was an ancient parish in Middlesex that included the market town of Uxbridge. During the 1920s the civil parishes in England, civil parish bore Metro-land, a rapid, planned increase in population and housing, and was absorbed by Municipal Borough of Uxbridge, Uxbridge Urban District in 1929. It has formed part of Greater London since 1965. Much of Hillingdon has lasting, albeit minor, administrative effect as the current Hillingdon East wards of the United Kingdom, ward for electing councillors to Hillingdon London Borough Council. In November 2010, the ward had a recorded population of 12,403. The London Borough of Hillingdon () is a London borough in Greater London, England. It forms part of outer London and West London, being the westernmost London borough. It was formed in 1965 from the districts of Hayes and Harlington Urban District, Hayes and Harlington, Ruislip-Northwood Urban District, Ruislip-Northwood, Municipal Borough of Uxbridge, Uxbridge, and Yiewsley and West Drayton Urban District, Yiewsley and West Drayton. Uxbridge
Uxbridge () is a suburban town in west London, England, and the administrative headquarters of the London Borough of Hillingdon, northwest of Charing Cross. Uxbridge formed part of the parish of Hillingdon in the county of Middlesex. As part of the suburban growth of London in the 20th century it expanded and increased in population, Municipal Borough of Uxbridge, becoming a municipal borough in 1955, and part of Greater London in 1965. Hillingdon London Borough Council, which styles itself Hillingdon Council, is the local authority for the London Borough of Hillingdon in Greater London, England. It is a London borough council, one of 32 in London. The council has been under Conservative majority control since 2006. The council is based at Hillingdon Civic Centre in Uxbridge. History The London Borough of Hillingdon and its council were created under the London Government Act 1963, with the first election held in 1964. Hillingdon Tube Station
Hillingdon tube station is a London Underground station in North Hillingdon in the London Borough of Hillingdon, West London. It is on the Uxbridge branches of both the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines, between Uxbridge and Ickenham stations. The station is located in Travelcard Zone 6. Resited in 1992, it is also the most recently constructed station on the Metropolitan line. History The Metropolitan Railway ( Harrow & Uxbridge Railway) constructed the line between Harrow on the Hill and Uxbridge; this was opened on 4 July 1904, with an intermediate station at Ruislip. At first services were operated by steam trains, before electrification was completed on 1 January 1905. Municipal Borough Of Uxbridge
Uxbridge was a local government district in north west Middlesex, England, from 1849 to 1965, seated in the town of Uxbridge. History Uxbridge was one of the first towns in England to adopt the Public Health Act 1848 in 1849 and form a local board of health. Under the Local Government Act 1894 the local board district was replaced by an urban district. Until 1927 the council met in a council chamber on the upper floor of Uxbridge Market House on the High Street, which had been built in 1788, and had its offices at various locations in the town. In 1927 the council moved to a converted house called Southfields at 265 High Street, which served as both its offices and meeting place. The district initially consisted of the parishes of Uxbridge and Hillingdon West. Bishopshalt School is a secondary school and sixth form with academy status based in the London Borough of Hillingdon. It has specialisations in music and the performing arts. Between 2013 and 2014, the school was used for scenes in the BBC sitcom '' Big School''. History The current building within which the school is housed was built in 1858. Swakeleys School For Girls
Swakeleys School for Girls is a secondary school and sixth form for girls located in the Hillingdon area of the London Borough of Hillingdon, England. It is the only girls' school in the borough and used to share a site with Abbotsfield School for Boys in Clifton Gardens, until it was rebuilt in 2017, and reformed into the unisex Oak Wood School. After the closure of Abbotsfield School, Swakeleys School became the only single-sex school in the London Borough of Hillingdon. Uxbridge Rural District
Uxbridge Rural District was, from 1894 to 1929, a local government district in Middlesex, England. Prior sanitary and poor law bodies This entity amounted to a widening of the functions and powers of Uxbridge rural sanitary district formed in 1875. Alongside that district and the town's urban one, since the 1834 remodelling of the poor law and until 1894, the Uxbridge Poor Law Union existed. The district, and union, excluded the three small southern and three small eastern parishes of Elthorne Hundred – an early medieval unit of varied but always relatively little importance after the English reformation. A little of Hillingdon, the parish bounding Uxbridge on three of its four sides, moved from the sanitary district to the urban district in 1883. Metropolitan Line
The Metropolitan line, colloquially known as the Met, is a London Underground line between in the City of London and and in Buckinghamshire, with branches to in Hertfordshire and in London Borough of Hillingdon, Hillingdon. A40 Road
The A40 is a trunk road which runs between London and Goodwick (Fishguard), Wales, and officially called The London to Fishguard Trunk Road (A40) in all legal documents and Acts. Much of its length within England has been superseded by motorways, such as the M40, and has lost its trunk road status, though it retains it west of Gloucester, including its length within Wales. It is approximately long.
