Hill Top is a former railway station which was located on the Picton – Mittagong loop railway line. History The station opened on 5 December 1878 as ''Big Hill Upper Siding'', was renamed ''Colo'' in 1881 and became ''Hill Top'' on 1 May 1883. The station along with the Loop Line was closed in 1978. The station has been almost demolished, the platform building is gone and the platform is being restored. The loop line from Picton to Colo Vale is in transition to reopen. Upgrades are in progress. The Main Southern Railway (or Great Southern Railway) is a major railway in New South Wales, Australia. It runs from Sydney to Albury, near the Victorian border. The line passes through the Southern Highlands, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes and Riverina regions. Description of route The Main Southern Railway commences as an electrified pair of tracks in the Sydney metropolitan area. Since 1924, the line branches from the Main Suburban railway line at Lidcombe and runs via Regents Park to Cabramatta, where it rejoins the original route from Granville. The line then heads towards Campbelltown and Macarthur, the current limit of electrification and suburban passenger services. The electrification previously extended to Glenlee Colliery, but this was removed following the cessation of electric haulage of freight trains in the 1990s. Hill Top is a Northern Village of the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia, in Wingecarribee Shire. Previous names of the village include ''Hilltop'' and ''Jellore''. It is a 17 km drive to Mittagong and around 10 km drive to the Hume Highway via Colo Vale. It is roughly 6–8 km to Yerrinbool as the crow flies. History It was formerly on the Main Southern Railway, until that line was deviated in 1919 to a less steep alignment with easier grades. The original line became the Picton Loop line, which closed in 1978. The remains of Hill Top station platform can still be seen. Facilities Hill Top has commercial facilities such as a pizzeria, bakery, chemist, general store, liquor store, real estate agent, and GP's surgery. Northern Villages is the name that refers to the small villages and hamlets that make up the north of the Southern Highlands and Wingecarribee Shire. All are north of Mittagong. The Southern Highlands, also locally referred to as the Highlands, is a geographical region and district in New South Wales, Australia and is 110 km south-west of Sydney.
