Highland Park, Los Angeles
Highland Park is a neighborhood in Los Angeles, California, located in the city's Northeast Los Angeles, Northeast region. It was one of the first subdivisions of Los Angeles and is inhabited by a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic groups. History The area was settled thousands of years ago by Paleo-Indians, and would later be settled by the Kizh. After the founding of Los Angeles in 1781, the Corporal of the Guard at the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, Jose Maria Verdugo, was granted the 36,403 acre Rancho San Rafael which included present day Highland Park. Drought in the mid-19th century resulted in economic hardship for the Verdugo family, which eventually compelled them to auction off Rancho San Rafael in 1869 for $3,500 over an unpaid loan. The San Rafael tract was purchased by Andrew Glassell and Albert J. Chapman, who leased it out to sheep herders. The California State Senate is the upper house of the California State Legislature (the lower house being the California State Assembly). Mission San Gabriel Arcángel
Mission San Gabriel Arcángel () is a Californian mission and historic landmark in San Gabriel, California. It was founded by the Spanish Empire on the Nativity of Mary September 8, 1771, as the fourth of what would become twenty-one Spanish missions in California. San Gabriel Arcángel was named after the Archangel Gabriel and often referred to as the "Godmother of the Pueblo of Los Angeles." The mission was designed by Antonio Cruzado, who gave the building its capped buttresses and the tall narrow windows, which are unique among the missions of the California chain. It was completed in 1805. A large stone cross stands in the center of the ''Campo Santo'' (cemetery), first consecrated in 1778 and then again on January 29, 1939. It serves as the final resting place for some 6,000 neophytes. Kizh
The Kizh or Kit’c ( ) are an Indigenous people of California, the historically and ethnographically documented lineal descendants of the Mission Indians of San Gabriel. They belong to a group commonly known by the Spanish name Gabrieleño. The name Kizh is a shortened version of the first name used to represent all of the Gabrieleño-speaking People of the Los Angeles Basin, Kichereno, which "is not a place name, but a tribe name, the name of a kind of people." (Harrington 1986: R129 F345; cited in McCawley 1996, 43). The name ''Kizh'' is derived from a reference by a Canadian ethnologist to one of the numerous villages in the Los Angeles Basin from records at ''Mission Viejas, Kizheriños'' (The People of the Willow Houses).
