The High Commission of Jamaica in London is the diplomatic mission of Jamaica in the United Kingdom. History The High Commission had its beginnings in 1962. Among the first diplomatic missions to be established after the attainment of independence from Britain, the office was initially located at Bruton and Grosvenor Streets, then on St James's Street, before eventually moving to its current location Prince Consort Road. For many decades, Jamaicans have been travelling to England to work and study. In the 1940s many Jamaicans volunteered and fought alongside the British in World War II. In the post-war era, there was mass migration from Jamaica due labour shortages in the 'motherland', with the first arrivals aboard , bringing almost 500 Jamaicans to Britain. Waves of Jamaicans later emigrated to the United Kingdom for economic and educational reasons. Aloun Ndombet-Assamba (born 27 February 1955) is a Jamaican lawyer, politician and diplomat. She was formerly Member of Parliament for Saint Ann South Eastern and served as Jamaica's Minister of Tourism, Entertainment, and Culture. She has served as High Commissioner for Jamaica in London between 2012 and 2016. Anthony Johnson (14 June 1938 – 28 April 2021) was a Jamaican politician, diplomat, economist and university lecturer. He was a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) senator and JLP Member of Parliament of Jamaica, Parliament, ambassador to the United States, and High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Biography Johnson graduated from Kingston College (Jamaica), Kingston College, and went on to earn a BA in Economics and an MA in International Trade and Finance from the University of California at Los Angeles.
