Hieronymous Bosch
Hieronymus Bosch (; ; born Jheronimus van Aken ; – 9 August 1516) was a Dutch people, Dutch painter from Duchy of Brabant, Brabant. He is one of the most notable representatives of the Early Netherlandish painting school. His work, generally oil on oak wood, mainly contains fantastic art, fantastic illustrations of religious concepts and narratives. Within his lifetime, his work was collected in the Netherlands, Austria, and Spain, and widely copied, especially his macabre and nightmarish depictions of hell. Little is known of Bosch's life, though there are some records. He spent most of it in the town of 's-Hertogenbosch, where he was born in his grandfather's house. The roots of his forefathers are in Nijmegen and Aachen (which is visible in his surname: Van Aken). His pessimistic fantastical style cast a wide influence on northern art of the 16th century, with Pieter Bruegel the Elder being his best-known follower. Recueil D'Arras
The Recueil d'Arras is a mid 16th century manuscript. Tentatively attributed to the Netherlandish artist , the ''recueil'' (miscellany) comprises 293 paper folios, of which 289 (numbers 5–177, 179–293, and 271)Campbell, 301 contain copies of portraits of named historical people. The book is named after the city of its current location, Arras in Northern France. It is not known who commissioned the book, or for what purpose; but it is of significant historical interest, as it reproduces many near contemporary depictions of known political, courtly, or artistic persons. Illustrious Brotherhood Of Our Blessed Lady
The Illustrious Brotherhood of Our Blessed Lady (Illustre Lieve Vrouwe Broederschap) was a religious confraternity founded in 1318 in 's-Hertogenbosch to promote the veneration of the Mother of God. The brotherhood was organized around a carved wooden image of the Virgin Mary in St John’s Cathedral in 's-Hertogenbosch. The Brotherhood had two types of members: ordinary members and sworn members, also called 'swan-brethren' because they used to donate a swan for the yearly banquet. Sworn members were clerics in principle; in fact they were often chosen among the nobility, the magistrates, etc. As a result, the Brotherhood also functioned as an important social network. ''The Crucifixion of Saint Wilgefortis '' is a triptych by the Early Netherlandish painter Hieronymus Bosch. The subject of the painting has been uncertain, and it has also been known as the ''Triptych of the Crucified Martyr'', or ''The Crucifixion of Saint Julia'', but is now believed to depict Saint Wilgefortis (also known as St Uncumber or St Liberata). ''The Temptation of St. Anthony'' is a painting of disputed authorship, attributed to either the Early Netherlandish painting, Early Netherlandish artist Hieronymus Bosch or a follower. The ''Adoration of the Magi'' or ''The Epiphany'' is a triptych oil painting on wood panel by the Netherlandish artist Hieronymus Bosch, executed around 1485–1500. It is now in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain. History In about 1494, Peeter Scheyfve (-1507) and Agnes de Gramme (?-about 1497) commissioned this altarpiece. Middle Dutch is a collective name for a number of closely related West Germanic dialects whose ancestor was Old Dutch. It was spoken and written between 1150 and 1500.
